Neil Olshey on Thursday said he still doesn't get Portland.
The Trail Blazers' new general manager, who grew up in Queens and worked the past decade in Los Angeles, says he understands the attention, intensity and passion of the Blazers fan base.
But he says he can't figure out the negativity here, mostly within the media, about the upcoming draft, free agency and the impending coaching search, which he assures will be "exhaustive."
He's been on the job all of 10 days and he says he feels like the media and some of the fan base want him to already have hired a coach, decided who he is going to draft with the Nos. 6 and 11 overall picks, and chart a course for free agency.
[...]
He doesn't know if he is going to keep or trade one or both of the Blazers' lottery picks. He doesn't know who he is going to pursue in free agency. And he doesn't know who he will pursue for head coach.
Olshey said many of his decisions will be dictated by how much value he, and the rest of the league, places on the Blazers' top two picks.

Re: Quick: Olshey doesn't get Portland
More like he's just getting an idea of how the Portland media and most fans (over)react to all things Blazers. He's spent the last a decade or so with that 'other' LA team, where the "fans" and media in LA could have cared less about anything they did until last season. Now he's in Portland where the Blazers are the only game in town and every comment he makes, no matter how minor, will be dissected from every conceivable angle for about 8 hours a day on the radio.
Basically he went from relative obscurity to being under a microscope in roughly a weeks time.
Seriously, take his whole "Kaleb Canales is my guy" quote that he had at his press conference. If Kaleb were with the Clippers and Olshey made that comment during a presser in LA, pre-Paul trade, that comment would come and gone without anyone even repeating it. Here in Portland, that comment gets made and 2 weeks later media members are STILL talking/debating it.

I meant pre-Paul trade, not post-Paul, but I think you got my point.

Mostly I just read it as he thinks the media is way too negative and impatient, though that seems to have flown entirely over Quick's head except for a small bit.

media is finicky in general, local & heck even National. Portland is a passionate fan base with nothing else outside of the Blazers as far as big time pro teams goes. While the overreactions & general whoa is me POV at times is never needed, it all comes from a good place in my opinion.
Jason Quick is a headline chaser, hes an awkward guy who doesnt quite fit in w/ NBA Players, this is just another story he created with a catchy headline.

Agreed. And fwiw, he's absolutely 100% correct. The majority of fans and media in Portland should take a step back, take a deep breath and think about things before jumping straight to the keyboard. Unfortunately, outside of a select few media members, that pretty much never happens.
I've pretty much stopped reading or listening to anything Dwight Jaynes ever says. The only thing he's a "Godfather" of is the over-reactionary Oregon sports media. He set the gold standard of that in Portland, John Canzano, Jason Quick and Chad Doing simply picked up his torch and ran with it. Unfortunately for any level-headed fans, Jaynes didn't go away when he burned his bridges with a majority of the print media outlets in Portland, he just found new ways to get his jumping-the-gun opinions out.
At a certain point, I can't entirely fault them. If they tried to be level-headed and well thought out about certain stories, their articles would be much less interesting. Lets face it, when things first happen and there's no hindsight to look back on, the simple undeniable fact is that no one knows how a decision the team makes will turn out in the long-run. The big punching bag lately is the whole Canales thing, but the unquestionable fact is that none of us; not Jaynes, not Quick, not Canzano, not Doing, nor none of us, know how good or bad of a coach Canales may be. He could end up being perfectly fine, but because people see that he doesn't have a lot of experience, they flip out. But it's not impossible that he works out great, again, simple fact is we don't know and won't know until there's more proof to look at. That however, doesn't not make for a sexy article that will sell papers.
If anyone just wants level-headed, fairly unbiased reporting, I suggest reading anything by Mike Tokito, Joe Freeman, or Chris Haynes. If your looking for fairly unbiased and balanced radio personalities, I'd suggest Brian Berger or Issac and Big Suke of 1080 The Fan's Primetime.

Agreed. I think it is mostly sad for The Oregonian that they have so little self-awareness, that they can't see they've lost so many of their sources, that their sensationalism caused it, and now not only are they constantly out-scooped by national outlets on the east coast HOURS before, but they're getting out-scooped and out-worked by Chris Haynes.

I can honestly say, all joking aside, I am shocked at his overall bball knowledge, he screams old reporter w/ no clue how today's world works.
I dont think a good amount of local reporters know bball at the level they should but some of the things he says are mind boggling to me.

& Chris Haynes was a blog writer last year at this time, his knowledge of bball is still very limited but hes an open minded opinion, he lets the story, based on facts form what he reports. Its refreshing..

Oh yeah, it wasn't a knock against Chris Haynes at all - just the disparity in available resources between Quick/Canzano/The Oregonian and Haynes/CSNNW the website is mind-boggling when put into perspective.

I didnt take it as a knock at all, I agree with you.
Chris Haynes is a newbie & hes already surpassed these "Portland media vets"
It would shock the "shock reporters" how many folks just want the facts & news without the sensationalism & unsolicited opinions.

I don't know if it's a lack of bbiq or just plain laziness. Honestly, everything Jaynes does, from his short radio interviews to his "blog", it all just smacks of laziness. He just does the bare minimum that will keep him relevant and on TV.

It is laziness due to his elitist attitude. He thinks he is the hard hitter, the realist, the one with the knowledge. Any one who both refers to himself as 'the godfather' and encourages others to as well is so out of touch with reality, he probably thinks his least amount of effort still makes his 'contributions' better than all the rest.
He is insufferable.

there might be some of that involved but ball knowledge is very transparent & bball is not a strength of his.

Re: Quick: Olshey doesn't get Portland
Is it just me or has the oregonian ripped on the Blazers ever since we fired mr talky talk Kevin Pritchard? I was a fan of KP but holy cow the oregonian is sickening, same game over and over. I'm beginning to think we need to start a no-oregonian policy on realgm, though obviously that wouldn't work too well
.
First it was the jailblazers which I will NEVER forgive the oregonian for. They were an inch away from scaring the Blazers away from Portland if our owner wasn't so supportive of the city. Now we did what they wanted and built a class organization and now they say we hired a guy who doesn't get our city. Yeah, if he doesn't get Portland why would he be anxious to sign here?
I mean yes I understand that this article wasn't an entire knock on the team or its fans but is this really all that our biggest newspaper can surmise?
