Can't find the Source, sorry. :-? But why are we signing random scrubs for? Just to see if they outdo Claver/someone? Won't have to try hard... thoughts?

The Oregonian's Joe Freeman reports that the Portland Trail Blazers have signed former Iowa State guard Diante Garrett to a non-guaranteed, two-year contract.

Probably just bringing in some practice players to motivate our bench.

Diante should fire his agent. Why a 2 year non-guaranteed contract? The Blazers are looking for talent. Talent willing to sign on to servitude is a bonus. Why not a 1 year non-guaranteed contract and a fair chance for Diante to be the beneficiary of his hard work if by some miracle he succeeds?

Good job Olshey but it’s not nice to take advantage of stupid people. I’m talking about Diante’s agent. Diante should sue his agent for incompetence. He would win on summary judgment.

Just a quick reminder, every August NBA teams sign non-guaranteed contracts to a number of guys and invite them to training camp. There in a 90+% chance the guys are cut, especially if the team already has 15 guaranteed contracts.

I think most people understand that. What I (and I don't think I'm alone here) don't understand is why they're news this year. Seems like most years there's a flurry of these right before training camp and we all just ignore them and we're not surprised when none of these guys make the team.

For some reason this year the Blazers are signing guys well in advance of camp. Makes me think these guys might be more than training camp fodder. Granted, we're talking about two guys. Would it have any real effect on the fortunes of the team if the Blazers cut their worst two guys and these two guys made the team?

Either way I'm grateful to Neil O'Shea (sp?) for doing things a little differently this year and giving us something to talk about. Even if it's really nothing.

Living in Utah I saw a lot of this kid last year. He was the best defender in Utah's backcourt last year and did a serviceable job of setting up his teammates and running the Jazz offense. Not saying he's going to make the team but if he looks good in camp and can function in our ball movement offense then let's buy out Claver.
From Portland to Reno to Vegas to LA to SLC and on to HotLanta. Winning at life. Too Blessed to be Stressed

Can anyone explain why we offer 2-year unguaranteed contracts and not one-year? Is there a financial benefit to either the player or organization?

If Garrett somehow makes the final final roster, the Blazers would have a TO for next year and his unguaranteed minimum contract would still be an asset.
