Why isn't Willie Cauley-Stein getting more minutes?

Post#1 » by BleedGreen1989 » Wed Jan 13, 2016 2:52 am

Outsider opinion but I've been a big fan of Trill since Kentucky and even drafted him in a couple keeper leagues. I know he's had his finger issues but when I watch WCS, he looks good.

Was reading this article on SB Nation that illustrated it nicely...

Is this on Karl? Willie? Something he's not doing?

Statistically WCS has looked good with Cousins, and I think he was drafted ultimately as a compliment to Cousins

This year it's more a numbers crunch. Two of our better players this year are big SFs who can play some at the 4, Rudy and Omri, who have warranted 30+ in addition to Cousins/Koufos down low. Throw in the fact that he's a rookie on a win-now motivated team.

Like the article says Karl has always mentioned his conditioning. I will agree he does suck a lot of wind while he's playing, but he seems to be moving freely. You said you watched him at Kentucky, has he always looked dead beat tired while I'm between play? Is that just his way of recouping energy or is this a sign he's out of conditioning ?

Karl underplays McLemore and WCS and overplays Belinelli and Koufos along with giving minutes to Anderson and overplaying double point guard lineups.

It's the same story with Karl and young guys since time immemorial.

Not exactly. Go talk to life long Nuggets fans and tell them Willie starts, or even plays for that matter. Those fans will tell you that is not the norm with Karl, and they take it as Karl must really like him.

That's a good point. I guess, relatively speaking for Karl, this is playing the young guys a lot.

Cauley-Stein once again shines in his limited minutes. Dude just enters the game and does what he does. How Koufus gets more minutes than him is mind boggling

I never recall Willie being out of breath/shape. That could of been because he was so athletically ahead of guys in college he didn't have to "try" as hard as now in the NBA?

I live on the East Coast and unfortunately don't get to watch basketball on the West as much as I'd like but it seems every time he plays (almost), he impacts the game very positively.

Led the team with +12 last night.

Haha, DANGIT! I didn't even notice date on that. Just read the last few posts after the chart you posted and went to check the stats. My bad

Yeah, Koufos and WCS stat line is almost identical besides WCS shooting 60% and KK shooting 53%. That probably has a lot to do with WCS's amount of above the rim plays.

Your best netrtg lineup has WCS in it, instead of Casspri with the starters. I'm not sure that's exactly enough of a sample size to be taken that literally but that's what is working best sometimes.

I'm just gonna drop this here. 12 pts, reb, 2 steals in 17 minutes.

Seems like we should have one of Acy/WCS (defense) and one of Cousins/Gay (offense) in the game at all times.

When we don't things go to **** in a hurry.
