Why is everyone sleeping on Joey Dorsey?

Post#1 » by sipclip » Thu Jan 31, 2008 4:41 am

He has a chance to be another Ben Wallace with his great defense and relentless rebounding but gets absolutely no respect in mock drafts. At worst he should be in the top 25.

Well. To be fair, Ben Wallace went undrafted. So, if Dorsey gets selected at all, he's ahead of the curve.

Maybe it's because he'll be 25 years old throughout his rookie year...

no offense whatsoever, but should be a solid early 2nd rounder because of his strength and rebounding ability

his age does hurt his stock

Yeah I agree. Age is a bit overblown especially for someone like Dorsey who is basically a what you see is what you get guy. Age matters if you're talking about a guy that has shown some flashes but is really a raw player. Dorsey, for his lack of an offensive game, is not a raw player at all. He should be able to contribute right away in the NBA even if he'll never average double-digits in scoring. He has an NBA body (if anybody currently playing college ball does he does), he's the leader of the Memphs team, he plays with emotion, he bangs, he rebounds, he blocks shots and he doesn't back down. Some team, whatever team, that drafts him IMHO is going to get a great guy and a great team player. Is he going to be an All-Star or even another young Ben Wallace? Who knows, but even if he doesn't doesnt mean that he's not worth a 1st round pick. Just look at David Lee. He's not going to be an All-Star and some don't even think he should be a starter but if you look at the draft he was taken, he'd be a lottery pick. So guys that project to at least great role players can be valuable and definitely valuable enough to be a 1st rounder. Dorsey is limited by not having a lot of upside but then again for what he is able to do he is about as ready in those areas as you can get right now and NBA teams are always willing to take a big, tough, aggressive, defensively strong big man.

Another thing about Dorsey is that you pretty much can be sure that he has no pretence about being a guy that needs to ball or the spotlight. He rarely takes shots right now unless it's within his comfort zone, he doesn't go beyond what he can do. The risk of him not being able to adjust because he was the focus of his team in college but may not in the pro's (a problem with a lot of guys that get drafted) is really not applicable here. He is every bit looking like the type of guy that would be perfectly happy doing the dirty work and that is something that is in short supply on most every team. He'll make some offensive minded big on whatever team drafts him VERY, VERY happy. Just look at it this way...Dorsey is currently the best role player on the best team in college basketball, a team who's style is about as NBA a style as there is. He'll be more than fine adjusting to NBA play as a role player.

I have no clue why everyone is sleeping on Joey Dorsey.

He is one of the best big men in the country.

He's said that if he's not drafted in the first round, he's going to play pro football. There were NFL scouts at the Gerogetown game looking at him and they were impressed.

My pick so far for 2nd round sleeper. Would love for the Kings to nab him then.

Pistons could take him with their 1st depending on who's off the board.

A Maxiell/Dorsey frontcourt is undersized but damn would they be tough as hell. :)

I could see Joey as being a late first rounder or an early second rounder.
