It's a good thing for him and every NBA team that could draft him.

he's an idiot, he's a top 5 pick this year and no way he'll drop after 5th. And he's playing with an identical player in Quincy Miller next year and Miller could be the go-to-guy, it'll affect his draft stock for sure.

Re: Perry Jones III will not declare.
This is a mistake by Jones to say the least. I still like the kid, but he stands to gain very little from returning to school. Even if he has a good year and shows why people love his upside so much, he will still have to compete with a very strong draft class overall and especially strong with bigs.
Lots of risk, little reward.

2012 draft will be weak and PJ's people know this. The league is pushing hard for raising the minimum age in the new CBA to 20.

And when he hears the news saying "the league's proposal to push it to 2 years age minimum has been abandoned", I can imagine him saying "ah sh@t, not good" and regret not declaring.

I think he has to repay some money, and will miss 6 games next season?

Very surprising. His family is dirt poor, his mom is sick, and he got screwed over by the NCAA. How much is Baylor paying him?

On the flip side, not playing with Lacedarius Dunn can only be a good thng, right?

Apparently enough.

This is true, but he does play the same position as incoming lotto pick Quincy Miller. Could be some issues there.

I love the decision for him. It isn't about whether he'll go as high next year and frankly, I'd be shocked if someone with his talent ever dropped out of the top 15 even as a soph. It's about entering the NBA when you're ready and knowing you have to develop your game
PJIII is the exactly the type of player that needed to stay in. And from what I've read about his personality it makes sense. Quiet, super shy kid. Definitely not ready to enter the NBA pressure yet

maybe this is good he dominates his sophomore year and then turns into the hands down number one pick. He has a higher ceiling than anyone in the 12 draft if shows some promise that he can reach that ceiling he should be the number one pick.

while this may have been a bad financial decision, it may prove to be a great basketball decision. He definately has a lot of room to improve and quit frankly I believe you get better playing in college than riding the pine in the NBA.

Re: Perry Jones III will not declare.
This is one of those decisions you look back and say "why?". Well maybe Perry realized he wasn't ready for the money or life the NBA was and he wants to get another year of life under his belt. These moves aren't about that rookie deal, it's about the deal after wards.
Players like Jones (who can play better and show more) are guys who should go back and refine their game. guys like sullinger (who played as well as they can and the same holes still exist at the next level) are the ones who need to go.
Last time a potential top 10 pick from the Big 12 returned to college, Blake Griffin did alright. And Perry Jones has that potential to be a franchise changing player. he isn't one now but neither was Griffin his FR year.

Re: Perry Jones III will not declare.
This draft is starting to get weak.
I'm not even a huge fan of Perry, but yet another top prospect gone.
This is the disclaimer I had been giving all along, this draft had the chance to be very good and extremely underrated in hindsight, but if all the blue chip guys start going back to school, people who were saying it was going to be a weak draft are going to be right by default.
In all honesty, this could wind up being exactly the type of draft a guy like Jeremy Lamb should declare for if a couple more of the top guys go back to school.
I personally think he's good enough to have #1 overall pick potential next year, but he could also lock himself into top 8 this year if the chips fall his way.
He's definitely a guy I think should test the waters, barring major injury or falling flat on his face he's a guarantee to declare next season anyway, maybe he'll impress so much that an NBA team in the top 5 will fall in love with him and tell him to declare this year.

Is Baylor really the best place for a big man to develop? They always seem to have ball hogging guards.

If you are going to be drafted in the lotto you go get drafted and enjoy being a millionaire.
This is as much of a no-brainer decision as I can imagine.
