Who will be the best player to come from this draft?

Post#1 » by Skin » Tue May 21, 2013 6:38 pm

Forget all the rankings and mock drafts. Who will be the best player from this draft 3-5 years from now?

I'm starting to think Bennett has the most potential but also not great odds of reaching it. I'll say McLemore

Schroeder. Especially if he ends up in Utah or Dallas where he can play to his strengths early on.

3-5 years from now... Gobert would be a long shot pick, but... In 3 to 5, he could add 30-40 lbs (to 270+) in that time - right now he's still skinny enough to be pushed around - and still retain enough speed. 3-5 years to get fully adapted into the NBA defensive game; he's shown the instincts at the combine. Gobert could be a DPOY. I am not sure you will see more impact than that from this draft.

I think Victor Oladipo and/or Otto Porter will be better than McLemore in my opinion.

The only reason I can't answer this is because I will self-admit to not liking a lot of big men the first 3-5 years and then exploding in year 6-7.

Burke. He does absolutely everything you want a good PG to do, he's a competitor and he's got room to grow.

I really think Oladipo will be the best player in the draft.

He's already a great player. He's very hard working and a great athlete with nice long arms, sky is the limit for him. I think because he is known as a defense guy, it kind of puts an invisible ceiling to most people who make mocks.

I mean for a guy who is considered a defensive specialist, he has a pretty well developed offensive game. Mechanic yes, but it's still there and improving. Decent handles, decent jumper, nice aggression, good at attacking the rim - he can def be a positive on the offensive end.

I think an elite defensive player with an offensive game would probably be the best player in this draft. Oladipo is like Luol Deng type of guy, and I'm not convinced that anyone will be better than that (though there is potential, like guys like Ben Mclemore and Noel certainly can be more valuable to that).

This is the safest pick at this point. There are some other guys with more potential, but Burke is most likely to maximize.

So much of success is situation. If we'd have done this last year not many folks would have Lillard as their top guy. But, put him on a team where he gets to run the squad for 39 minutes a night and he looks fantastic. If Lillard had been drafted on a team where he was forced to come off the bench nobody would care much about him, and it would all be about Davis.

So, my question is, which of these kids is going to be given the chance to shine? Which one is going to land in a situation where a team is desparate enough to give them 36+mpg? That's a very hard prediction to make at this point. Even after the draft it's not so easy.

And lastly, best player usually just means highest scorer in RealGM parlance. There is a reason Noel hasn't been gotten a mention yet. So, if you want to guess who the best player is, your safest bet is to pick the most dominant scorer and hope he lands on a team desparate enough to give him run. Not much else matters too much.
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

No one has listed Noel as their top guy. Not surprising.
