I'd be very surprised if Roach doesn't return to duke as well. Idk when the last time a team had 4 returners as good as flip/roach/proctor/mitchell. Perhaps Kansas with Agbaji/Braun/remy martin/mccormack and of course, that kansas team won the title. And they didn't have the impact freshmen that duke has coming in.

Duke will probably be the preseason #1 team, especially if roach comes back.

Mgbako decommitted this morning, so there goes one part of their depth. I know there waiting to hop on a high level 5 in the transfer portal if one opens up. But ya no doubt Jon and the staff are really trying to stack the cards. Jon is selling these guys something really good because as a Duke fan, I’m not used to getting guys like Proctor and Flip for multiple years.

Haha after losing guys like Duval, Steward, Keels, Frank and so on. I got used to any of these guys no matter how well they played bouncing after a year haha. And to be clear, when I’m talking what Jon is selling, I’m talking those NIL checks haha.

I think Scheyer's sales pitch to these returners is a combination of:

a) NIL $ and how much you can make in NIL compared to what you'd make as a 2nd round pick (or possibly a late 1st rounder)
b) We get all you guys to come back and we'll be the favorites to win the national title. He is probably showing these guys footage of past Duke teams who won it all and selling them on becoming part of that history. Plus, being a starter on a team that wins it all helps your draft stock - go deeper into NCAA tourney, you get more exposure..
c) Telling them about guys like Keels (left school early, 2nd round pick, now has no team to play for), Matt Hurt (left duke early, undrafted, now stuck in g league), DJ Steward (left duke early, undrafted, now stuck in g league) but also you have Wendell moore who was a 1st round pick but has been riding the bench all year for a t-wolves team that isn't even that good. Not to mention guys who left school early (Kendall brown, baldwin Jr, rollins, JD davison, Tyty Washington, josh minott, etc.) who were late 1st or 2nd round picks, left early but not getting any NBA playing time. But he's also probably telling these guys about guys like Ochai Agbaji, Christian Braun, Keegan Murray, Jalen williams. Guys who stayed in school longer and it paid off for them.

Hurt left after sophomore year not freshmen year

i don't think money is really a factor for a dude like Flip, no amount of NIL money justifies essentially getting every contract extension a year later now (makes a huge difference over the course of a player's career)

it made sense for Big O last year and Kentucky because he's not necessarily a high end guy so taking that ~2mil in NIL, finishing college and then hitting the draft was a decent deal for him

i honestly just think Flip just wants to be one of those Duke legacy guys, legit wouldn't be surprised if he returns next year as well unless his stock soars.

I didn't say he did. I said he left "early" which just means he had more years left of college eligibility he could have used - but instead entered the draft, went undrafted and has been stuck in the g league ever since.

Stuff like that, I think is part of Scheyer's pitch to these guys to not be in such a rush to leave school..

Is there really that much money thanks to the NIL for guys who were mocked as late 1st round picks?

Bloody hell, when I first heard about college athletes are now allowed to make money, I thought only the top guys would make 7-figures.

Thought the projected lower first round and second round picks would get like low 6 figures at best.

i know Big O made something like 2 million last year to go back to Kentucky, but he's a great project player tho regardless of where he's projected to go

Yup.

One of the more well written, articulate and well thought out declaration announcements.

Seems like he definitely has a good head on his shoulders.
