Melo was highlymore regarded than Durant, Durant just received a lot of talk because that draft class was only about 2 players.

This.

Morrison was so incredibly hyped that draft and like Bgil said...people were calling him the next Larry Bird and many honestly believed it.

I definitely think Jay Williams should be high on the list. Till this day when I hear people talk about Jason Williams, Jay Williams pops into my head and I'm like what he can play again?

Some perspective is needed here. How good do you think Pistol Pete was? He's not in my Top 50.

Funny how people forget Jay Williams. Dude had massive hype. Easily the second biggest bust of the decade.

No kidding... He was an uberstar in college.

unfortunate what happened to him. Idk if i label him a bust or not, haven't made up my mind..because I'm very convinced that if he didn't get into that freakish accident, he would have been a 20 pt n 10 assist guy in the league. he had so much potential

Anyone who thinks anyone else here was remotely close to the level of hype Bron received is nuts... Being compared to Bill Russell and David Robinson or Tim Duncan is not comparable to being called the best of Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson combined.

Darko was a unknown player, so I don't see how a player who most scouts didn't even know can be over hyped. This guy got maybe a couple months of publicity?

I would also remove Bogut and Rose. You could also make a argument for removing Howard as he didn't get much hype before the draft.

The rest where all talked about years before their drafting...

I almost want to nominate Kwame Brown for this list due to press coverage, but it probably doesn't fit in terms of expectations. In the early days of the draft season back in 2001 there was no consensus #1. But when the Wizards won the lottery, all focus and attention was on Micheal Jordan and who he would pick. Because of Jordan's involvement, there was probably more scrutiny on this draft. When people started to realize that a high school player might make history and go #1, the attention grew even more.

Kwame got quite a bit of press leading up to the draft because of all these factors that were unrelated to how well he could actually play. This, I think, somehow elevated expectations for him.

Just for fun, I'd like to offer up my top 10 for the 90's

1 - Shaq
2 - Tim Duncan
3 - Chris Webber
4 - Derrick Coleman
5 - Glen Robinson
6 - Larry Johnson
7 - Shawn Bradley
8 - Penny Hardaway
9 - Allen Iverson
10 - Jason Kidd

May not be accurate since my memory is sketchy on how hyped up certain players were. I do remember that Shawn Bradley got loads of attention for his height. Shaq, Duncan and Webber should probably be the clear cut top 3. Derrick Coleman and Glen Robinson were other big time picks.

I don't know why people are claiming Bargs and Darko is a same breath... Bargs is million levels above Darko, and being a Raptors fan, he's turning into something we've been waiting for.

For some reason, I believe Oden would have gotten picked over LeBron if they were in the same class and were both right out of high school.

Oden is clearly #1 considering the hooplah around him being the guy with the championship pedigree.

People were higher on unproven Oden over All-NBA Dwight Howard at that time

That Miami fan just likes hating on Raptors any chance he gets.

As to the thread, Mayo got a lot of hype pre-college. He was featured in SI when he was in the 7th grade. He was also touted as the next Lebron until he stopped growing. Once he got to USC people really started to think he was over hyped and lowered all expectations. Even days before the draft people thought he'd slip to 10th or worse. Some mocks thought he wasn't lottery worthy.

Pistol Pete probably had some ridiculous hype coming out of college. IIRC he averaged aorund 44ppg in college.

I don't see how Durant can be above Oden when Oden went over Durant and 90% of GMs would've made the same move. LeBron is the unquestioned number one. His high school games were televised on ESPN for one and the hype for him was unbelievable.

1. LeBron James
2. Greg Oden
3. Kevin Durant
4. Yao Ming
5. Darko Milicic
6. Carmelo Anthony
7. Blake Griffin
8. Derrick Rose
9. Jay Williams
10. Beasley/Dwight/Okafor
