Don't live the two Wemby 3s there.

He's open yes but opponent has window to allow his the shot which is a gamble in their favour in transition.

Better we take it inside

We're just throwing up prayers at the rim.

Far less smart proper execution late.

Not good choices.

4TH Q: SPURS 102 WARRIORS 112

Up 10 to start; down 10 to finish. An exemplar of the swings in many games this season.

Wemby and Devin returned and combined for 44 points but struggled with efficiency though they were rightly one and two in FGAs. Keldon rounded out our main top three scorers, but also on low efficiency. Such is the variance from one game to the next.

Wemby is wonderful but the combination of super high almost prescient BBIQ and huge talent that relies on skill and quick adjustments means he is not the easiest to play alongside and it showed with a more clunky O.

He led us with 27 on 10-25, 3-9 from 3, 4-9FTs, with 14 boards (2 on O), 3 assists, 1 steal, and 2 blocks in 31 minutes. He also had 3TOs from succumbing to pressure that comes from being the defensive focal point. All but one of his non-3s attempts were in the paint. He went to work in the 4TH Q with 11FGAs, making 2-5 from 3 and 2-6 everywhere else. I like the effort and the chances, just a lot of contests and bunnies.

Devin scored 17 on 5-14, game high 5-8 from 3, 2-2FTs with only 1 board, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 2TOs in game high 37 minutes. Terrific arc shooting from Devin but none of his other attempts were in the paint. And he made none of those. Sort of remarkable both in inefficiency and more passive shot selection. You take what the D gives you, and perhaps he was affected by the effects of missed game, but more than half of his overall attempts were from the arc. His energy has been a barometer and as someone we rely on to set the forward motion mote, we do need more of the varied scoring package he has. If the mid range shots are not falling, will your way to find and create others.

Keldon pushed his way through to 16 points on 5-12, 2-6 from 3, 4-4FTs with 6 boards (2 on O), 1 assist, 1 block in bench high 30 minutes. Half of his shots were from the arc, and four of the others were in the restricted area, two outside the paint. He made 2-4 in the paint and did well to get to the FT line.

But the top three main scorers combined for 23 of our 37 attempts from 3. They combined for 10 made with only one of them scoring it efficiently; still, that’s 43%. It was the inefficiency everywhere else by them that proved costly. We lost PITP 52-48.

We faced more intense D pressure and better more polished scoring from an opponent with payback in mind. With two regular starters returning to the first five, a far more physical and experienced group which gave us fits. The opponent may not be where they expect, but they still know how to run their system very well. We shot from the arc at an even higher rate this game than previous one at nearly 40% but we shot 10% less efficiently overall.

Sochan stepped up with an efficient 9 on 4-10, 1-2 from 3. All of his other non-3s attempts were in the restricted area. Very solid work, physical, but finishing around the rim with craft and finesse is a work in progress. He also grabbed 7 boards (1 on O), and dished 7 assists, along with 1 steal, and 2 blocks. It’s a big output, giving the breadth of his two-way potential, all the more impressive considering he has but nascent skills. And we needed a bigger broader game from him with Dom only playing 7 minutes, making 1-3, grabbing 3 boards (1 on O), and 1 block.

Tre only put up 3-6, 0-1 from 3 for 6 points, 5 boards (1 on O), 1 steal, and tied for team high 7 assists. Tough D assignment versus a seasoned wily bulky vet. And with Tre not getting as many scoring chances, we needed the bench guards to step up. Blake chipped in 4 on 2-3, 0-1 from 3, but Branham struggled with only 2 points on 1-8, 0-4 from 3. Blake got 1 board and 3 assists (good that we’re getting more of these more consistently), but Branham had 1 board, 1 block, 2TOs. When not scoring, he has to find ways to make an impact. Especially defensively, for instance. Game low -16. Also has to try to limit the TOs. He’s been on a tear recently averaging over 20PPG over the previous four games, so no faulting the number of attempts and trying to score first. We need his maximizing his strengths. Another Spur with 3s and paint shooting profile, but he only made 1-4 in the paint, the lone make in the restricted area. He’s a more finesse type of scorer but more attempts at the rim not just in the paint with floaters is the energy creation we need. Some FT chances with some playing through physicality, just making things happen when outside shots aren’t falling. But we ended up with only 12 points among the three of them.

Julian was an efficient 3-5 from 3, 2 boards, and 2 assists in 28 minutes, the fourth highest he’s played this season. He’s coming on strong late in the season like he did last season. Weird pattern. But lets ride it for as long as he’s hot again.

Good to see Collins making shots again, scoring 10 on 5-7, 0-1 from 3, with 9 boards (3 on O), 3 assists, 1 steal, and game high 3 blocks to 4TOs in 17 minutes. I don’t love the bigs sagging in the paint, but his increased activity on both ends is a welcome return of more of his game. It’s taken quite some time to get production on both ends after returning from injury. It looked like a big part of it was plugging in mentally.

The 27 assists were terrific, the 10-15FTs were too low in terms of both the attempts and efficiency. Game details like 14TOs is below our average, good, but we gave up 28 points on them. That’s basically an average of a basket off of every turnover. Brutal. We also outrebounded them 49-46 and 12-10 on O boards but were edged 15-13 in second chance points.

The experience and response from a bigger team were factors that give us problems. We got put on our heels from the cohesion and physicality. Sustaining the strong start, finding ways to get to the rim more by setting up our speedy and physical players there is a learning experience. Winnable game but for recognition and reaction to its flows and patterns. Let’s learn from it and put the lessons into the next one.
