Bet on your sport, get banned.

It's a straight forward and reasonable punishment. You undermine the integrity of the game otherwise.

I do think they should be able to bet on money line for their own team to win (no spreads). I don't think there is anything ethically wrong or a breach in integrity for betting on what your job SHOULD be (i.e. get wins).

Braindead move from Jontay. He went from earning millions legitimately to getting banned from the NBA.

Betting on your team to win/betting on yourself to hit the Overs that were set for your individual line? I can easily forgive that, because you have to go out and produce/perform/win.

But betting the Unders?? Didn't even have the confidence to try and hit above 7.5 points and 5.5 boards, but instead leave the game on some BS eye poke. Bet on your own team to lose also??? Good riddance.

Wonder if he'll be in gambling website ads soon

Kind of funny from a league that encourages gambling. Silver is an idiot but Jontay really did it to himself.

It's fitting that this was a Raptors player. The trajectory of the organization since the Championship has literally been a straight line down to the bottom of the league, including a string of some of the worst moves in franchise history. How Bobby is still employed is remarkable. Masai's blind loyalty to players and staff has led to rotting assets and general complacency.

Silly Jontay, only the league gets to fix games.

Nonsense. We picked him up on a 10 day. Not like we spent five years developing him and gave him a big deal. This is a mere footnote. The league are the idiots for allowing gambling.

I think he probably has this reinvested. He is not the kind of person where it all went up his nose.

I don't think you understand how gambling work. Some people, probably Raptors fans who were excited about Jontay's potential, bet the over. They lost money, solely because of Jontay's decisions. That's theft. Literal theft.

I had a friend who was addicted to gambling (on stocks), got busted by his wife, and had to go through the 12 step process (one of which was to meet me for coffee and admit what he had done). But he wasn't manipulating the market like Jontay was. He didn't have an addiction problem. He had a fraud problem. And it is, or should be, criminal.

You realize I support the punishment as there is no other option in this case with the money that is involved. He isn't the first player, and he wont be the last. And most will never be caught.

Gambling affects many people in many ways, the innocent and the evil. And it's all negative except for those at the top profiting off of the illness.

I don't believe Jontay was evil. He wasn't even making that much off his bets, he was just making dumb decisions and the guy needs support for his issues. The promotion of gambling by the NBA will ruin far more lives then Jontay ever could if he never got caught and its not even close.

There are two issues here that can be considered independent: (1) he may have a gambling problem; (2) he cheated by betting or providing inside information to others on games in which he could influence.

NBA's finding: "Porter disclosed confidential information about his own health status to an individual he knew to be an NBA bettor, ahead of the March 20 game. That bettor placed an $80,000 player prop parlay to win $1.1 million, wagering that Porter would underperform in that game... Porter limited his own game participation to influence the outcome of one or more bets on his performance in at least one Raptors game."

Gambling is wagering on a event in which the outcome is determined by chance. What Jontay did had not to do with gambling. Rather, he cheated the outcome, for example, by taking himself out of games to favor those who used insider information to bet the under on him. The risk element - a key component of gambling - was severely reduced or gone. It's no longer gambling.

So you can feel sorry for those with gambling addiction but what got Jontay in hot water is not gambling. He cheated.

Jontay was gambling. And clearly has a problem that needs support.

Few, if any disagree that he cheated and should be punished. But this punishment changes nothing outside of optics as he isn't the only one doing similar and certainly wont be the last. This is one of many negative bi product of the hyper accessibility of gambling.

There are no positives. And the League and sportsbooks are the real problem that will wreak havoc for decades to come and this incident will be far from a one off.

I think just 1.

Three of the bets were multi-game parlay bets that included one Raptors game, in which Porter bet that the Raptors would lose. All three bets lost.

Does anyone here think the NBA would give a lifetime ban to Doncic for gambling? I'm being cynical, I know, but if Jontay were a Star player I think the NBA would have turned a blind eye.

That's the craziest part. He thought he was good enough to influence the outcome when he was just a borderline scrub. The team likely could have lost had he stayed in

They wouldn't have investigated to begin with and it would have been dealt with privately thru indirect channels. Obviously theres far less chance for a billion dollar star to chase a million on a parlay like Jontay but surely many still tip off friends with inside info at times... Anyone who thinks this league doesn't have multiple layers a rules based on status has their heads deep in the sand.

This was an opportunistic PR power move for the League to look like it has credibility to those willing to wager.

These type of statistical anomalies are easy to identify.

Every gambling site has trend models on what's being bet on which player, so a sudden increase in bets on a player to go under their prop numbers is always going to get flagged.

Rough season for us.

But at the very least this loser is no longer tied to our club.

Return to Toronto Raptors
