Reality Check: Raptors Republic Article

Post#1 » by firekil » Sun Nov 24, 2013 4:58 pm

http://www.raptorsrepublic.com/2013/11/ ... ity-check/

Recap of main points:
- Conference imbalance
- Slow pace
- Low EFG%
- Awful Assist Rate
- Stunted player development
- Future uncertainty

Just thought I'd post this since it goes over a lot of important points. The uncertainty of the future is the main one for me. With the chance of both Lowry and Gay walking out this summer, in my eyes, we NEED to move them. What do you guys think? Is this article too much gloom and doom or is it an objective perspective?

No one else is going to pay arudy $20M a year, why would he opt out?

This is the general opinion, but maybe there's more to it. There will be several teams with large swaths of cap room. There will be a limited pool of agents. Lowry (his best friend, son's godfather etc.), is very likely gone. Nobody is going to max out Gay, but maybe he is willing to secure a smaller payday sooner and not have to compete with the free agent class that will include LeBron/Melo et al. Additionally, he will have control over where he goes and will not have to worry about us trading him to the Bobcats. Several agents have opted out recently. Monta Ellis comes to mind. So am I way off base here, or is there more than enough reason for Gay to at least consider opting out?

I would be throlled if he opted out. The loss of an asset would suck; but it would be better for the team moving forward. Better to trade him, though. And yeah, there are some interesting thoughts in that article.

He can opt out because he feels he can get a bigger contract now after this season, then a year later.

Why risk playing another year in the NBA and maybe getting injured, or his value going down?

Rudy's next big multi year contract will be hist last big contract, he might as well opt out and get that if he's offered a decent one.

That was a terrible article. Granted im no writer, but we have some of the worst writers for any team, be it blogs/media/etc.. I dont frequent RR at all, so perhaps im making a rash judgement to their blog, but im saying in reference to over years of doing the daily papers/reading various blogs posted here/etc..

How does he not know DRTG is pace adjusted? among other things. Ugh.

I think what he's saying is that slow-pace deflates Drtg on a per-possession basis (By limiting transition ops or whatever). Not really sure that's true but I think that's what he's saying.

Lowry getting an eight digit offer? Just about any starter on any team signing a second or third contract for multiple years can expect an eight digit offer in the aggregate, but if the author of the article is suggesting Lowry will get a $10 million plus PER YEAR offer, I think he's smoking stronger stuff than Rob Ford ever inhaled.

You may want to change this sentence:
"Against their own Conference, the East teams were .500, which is basically what you should expect".

The record will always be .500 because a win for one team is registered as a loss against the other, and vice versa

I'm sure even Rudy is aware of the fact that if he opts out...the Raptors would not pay him franchise-player type money...and he would be hard pressed to find someone willing to pay him even what he is making right now.

He's gonna keep collecting his cheques until he is a free agent in 2015.

He is otherwise trade bait. He might be worth Caron Butler (expiring), Luke Ridnour (expiring), Gary Neal (3.2 million expiring after next season) and John Henson (good young big man). Henson should be starting but since Milwaukee has big money invested in Larry Sanders, Ersan Illyasova and Zaza Pachulia...it seems he might an odd-man out.

A great article, with two takeaways: 1) this is a bad team and 2) it has no player development in sight for the next year or two.
In fact, players are regressing under Casey, as he does not build on their strengths, and does not develop them to mask their weaknesses. Making a dude fat and forcing him to play idiotic basketball is one of the greatest examples of it.

You don't throw money at guys OJ Mayo and Zaza Pachulia if you are tanking. If there truly is a desire to build through the draft...you don't bring in Zaza to compete for minutes with Henson. They are competing...but failing...but they aren't tanking.

If they're going to **** the dog anyway and push for 8th, they might as well hang on to Rudiger and trade him when his contract is a true expiring contract.
