Funny thing is Pistons fans were all for the tank…when it started.

Once you reach historical levels of badness over multiple seasons, every mistake is highlighted. When you intentionally make moves to be bad, your margin for error is very small.

In Detroit’s case they made some critical mistakes drafting and now they are stuck in a spiral (that Portland is close to joining) if they don’t find the franchise player soon.

According to EPM, Wagner is still the best player in the class. I doubt the Magic trade either Suggs or Wagner for either. Case could be made for Suggs, but his improvement has been huge each year.

Wagner has actually had a pretty poor year. You also just can’t look at EPM because Herbert Jones is 3rd on that list ahead of guys like Mobley and Scottie.

I’ll tell you right now, there is absolutely no chance Weltman would choose to have either Suggs and Wagner over Scottie. Scottie is the best player by a wide margin and he’s got the most upside. Wagner isn’t a high upside player neither is Suggs and despite that they are still worse than Scottie right now.

Wagner has had a poor 3 shooting. Yet still the advanced metrics (EPM and BPM) have him as a better player than Barnes. This passes the eye test and the win test. Again not here to argue, just providing the information.

Both also capture Suggs off the charts improvement from year to year, although still technically above Barnes.


Looking around the NBA, one has to wonder how much IQ has made himself recently. $35m AAS? I can see the Spurs forcing the Raptors hand on the RFA.

Raptors are in a rebuilding phase so you can’t really look at wins and losses. And the reality is Franz is the one who has never played in a playoff game. I like Franz but Scottie was the one who coaches felt deserved to be an all-star. Not Franz. He’s just the better player. EPM and BPM will always have outliers. Right now Derrick White is just sitting outside the top 10 in EPM, ahead of much better players. There isn’t a single GM in this league who would take Franz over Scottie. If we were talking about last year then I’d agree that Franz was better but even last year, any GM would still take Scottie over Franz.

I was thinking the same about Precious. He stepped up in major minutes due to injuries, and now he can slot into a valuable lesser role with Thibs trust.
