Raptors RealGM Mock Draft: The Raptors select...

Post#1 » by vini_vidi_vici » Mon May 31, 2010 12:53 am

Next on the clock is the Toronto Raptors. Im sure this will be another polarizing pick. Do we draft on need or BPA, do we want potential or someone whos NBA ready? I see us packaging this pick for some reason, but if we keep it, id love Avery Bradley. Hassan Whiteside is just too raw, and really hurt his stock in the draft combine. I dont think Triano (and staff) are great developing young players, but I think he'll end up our pick.

Please note in order to vote, you dont just type in your pick, you have to click on the top, it seems some of you hadnt grasped that yet. Also, do you want me to keep going? Or you done now that the Raptors pick is up?

Roster: Hedo Turkoglu (F-G), Jose Calderon (G), Jarrett Jack (G), Andrea Bargnani (F-C), Demar DeRozan (G-F), Sonny Weems* (G-F), Marcus Banks (G), Reggie Evans (F-C), Marco Bellineli (G), Joey Dorsey* (F-C).
*Unguaranteed.

Mock Draft Projections
Cole Aldrich - NBADraft.net

Daniel Orton - DraftExpress.com

Daniel Orton - ESPN.com

(not updated!) Hassan Whiteside - HoopDoctors
Hassan has been both a breakout star and a mystery because of little TV exposure since his squad didn’t make it to the NCAA’s. Whiteside is this year’s trendy, fringe lottery pick because of his ability to help an NBA club immediately on the defensive end. Tremendous potential as a 19 year old who led the nation in blocked shots and developing low post game which produced 3 triple-doubles this season. Because of his slight frame, he tends to get pushed out of the lane by bigger opponents, but has pick-and-pop ability out to 20 feet. Needs to add weight. Defense is way ahead of offense. Comparison: Joakim Noah

I badly wanted to go with Daniel Orton just because of the Bynum factor BUT I ended up going with Avery Bradley because his game entices me overwhelmingly.

Went with Orton, but I don't think the management would go that route with Patterson/Donatas still on the board.

Well, I see this pick being involved in some type of trade, especially if this is all we have left on the board to choose from.

That being said, I personally would take Eric Bledsoe.

Danial Orton or Avery Bradley here. Since we are likely getting a high pick next season, and there's a lot of good PGs (Irving/Joseph/Knight) next draft, I say we go after Orton or even Whiteside here at 13. Both young with loads of potential. Orton seems like the safer pick.

where is the trade pick option? :) hate that Henry and George are off the board

Patterson while maybe not an exciting pick would add a lot of leadership to this team and thats something this team has desperately needed for a while. Tough low post scorer too
almost like an Okafor

When there is an athletic, defensive pg/sg in the draft you take him.

 He's a safer pick than Whiteside, my first instinct would be to draft him but I'm not sure he'd ever pan out in this pussified franchise. Players have no reason to improve in our current system.

Bradley, an athletic guard that can defend. Need more of those.

I dont know why people have no reading comprehension. a) hes not listed on the poll, b) he was taken by Utah.

I made this so elaborate so it would be easy to figure out, now I have to remind people to actually vote, and then to actually read the post. Thanks for your insight.

Edit: Also no one has said whether they want me to continue or not.

Gordon Hayward anyone? He looks like what Hedo should have been but more flashier. And with that hair he could be Red Rocket 2.

There's no way we would take Avery over Bledsoe if were drafting a guard. With Hedo likely gone, who's going handle the ball? Bradley's style doesn't fit anymore.

With that said...If this is what would actually be left, then I'd be torn between Orton and Babbitt. I picked Babbitt. Tested one of the best athleticly and is probably the best shooter in the draft. If Turk gets traded I think he would have a good season here.

Although I'd be okay with Orton or Bradley (and maybe Whiteside), I voted for Patrick Patterson.

Probably because I like alliteration.

And I have no opinion on whether you continue or not... I've only been voting/posting sporadically.
Good Lord, the little stoner's got a point.

I can't believe people are actually talking themselves into liking Daniel Orton. Bynum was a legit 7 footer with a huge wingspan & the top ranked center recruit out of high school. Daniel Orton is not even 6'10 in shoes and doesn't have nearly the athleticism that Bynum did at the same stage. If Orton is a lottery pick after a year of doing nothing in college then why aren't the likes of Alex Oriakhi, Ryan Kelly, Tiny Gallon all lottery picks? They were all more productive and similarly regarded prospects out of high school. What about Renardo Sidney, off court issues aside he has way more potential than Orton. Yet Gallon & Sidney are considered 2nd round prospects at best and Oriakhi & Kelly didn't come out because they weren't going to be locks in the first round.

Orton is the biggest smokescreen in this year's draft. It's a mix of UK hype and Araujo-like mystique that's taken on a life of its own.

Let's compare Orton to Patterson. Patterson was also a 5-Star big man coming out of HS. He was a higher ranked recruit than Orton in a year with the likes Beasley/Love/Mayo/Rose/Gordon whereas Orton was in a class with Wall/Favors/everybody else. By all accounts, Patterson has lived up to his hype in his 3 years of college, averaging over 15/8 in 3 years while anchoring the UK program. IF Orton develops well, and continues to improve. In 2 years he might be as good as Patrick Patterson is now.

You're telling me you're going to waste a lottery pick and spend 2 years of lottery salary on a guy so that he might develop into someone you could pick right now? And when he does develop to that point, you'll get 2 more years out of him on his rookie salary....or you could just go pick Patterson now and get 4 years out of the guy who is stronger, more athletic, more ready, and has actually performed in college.

Patterson over Orton 100 times out of 100. If any GM picks Orton over Patterson, he shouldn't be an NBA GM. It's not even a case of physical tools versus production. It's not like Orton has some amazing physical tools that you just can't teach...no, his standing reach is a couple of inches longer. But compared to Patterson he has a lower vertical, smaller hands, less strength, and less agility. Those are huge drawbacks for a post player, easily outweighing the standing reach advantage. It's baffling.
