The Kemba Walker Bandwagon Thread pg 50 upd. Raps Passing?

Post#1 » by DG88 » Wed May 18, 2011 5:19 am

Kemba Walker is probably the number 2 point guard in this draft. He's extremely quick and can get to the basket at will. Underrated passer in the pick and roll and has great intangibles like leadership, toughness and heart. He's NCAA champion and we need guys who come from a winning pedigree to join our team.

Here are some highlights of Mr Walker

The huge game winner by Kemba what a clutch performer.
With the fifth pick the Toronto Raptors select Kemba Walker from the University of Connecticut.

I dislike Kemba Walker as a prospect. He's a shoot-first guard without any real PG skills. He is slow off the dribble as well, is small, and can't defend... and meeh, he's apparently involved in that inner douche-circle with Lebron James, Wade, and co. as well.

You should re-read the March Madness thread for a taste of what's to come.

Bandwagon just got turned over.

Oh, and I hope he isn't in any inner-circle with LeBron James in it. That would lessen the appeal for me.

I do know that he likes Carmelo though.

I much rather engage in a Kemba/Knight debate than Jose/Jack which lead to Jose/Bayless. lol

Im in both bandwagons (Kemba and Knight) and as long as one of these 2 are Raptors on draft day w.e it's all good.

People are knocking Kemba for being shoot first. Yeah he is, but he has court vision too. Have you seen the teammates he had on his team this year? He damn well had to shoulder the offensive load. He's a finished product and college champ.

Knight meanwhile is a potential guy and was a top 5 recruit (and rated higher than Irving by some agencies). He went to a small time HS in Florida that focused on academics and as a result he had lacklustre teammates which forced him to be a do-it-all scorer at PG. That's why it took a while for him to adjust to playing PG at Kentucky and once he got it, he led the Cats to the final 4 because as we all know Terrence Jones was nowhere to be found. He'll be pretty good in the NBA.

Walker has the flash tho

Yeah right, Knight is the worst shoot first guard ever, how many times has he passed the ball to TJ??/ Coz he always aims to drive or jack up the damn shot. U saying Kemba is slow off the dribble, u kidding me??!??!?! Dude is lightening quick and he is a willing passer on so many occasion to his useless teammates...except that skinny looking urkel dude on the team.

anyways....I'm not much into the kemba/brandon rivalry...I'm just trying to push myself to liking Kemba right now....oh god this is so damn sad.

hopped and riding shotty. too much talent and desire with this kid that it's hard to picture him failing at this level.

If you look at 2009-2010 highlights you can see some of his court vision on display. But he has to get that low percentage out of his game.

Things Kemba Walker get falsely accused of:

Turnover prone - 2 turnovers per game to Knight's 3 despite extremely high usage

Poor defender - 2 steals per game to Knight's 0.7. Prior to this year when Kemba was more of a role player he was considered a defensive pest due to his speed and constant full court pressure of the opposing PG.

Slow off the dribble (wtf?) - Rajon Rondo told Ray Allen after playing against Kemba & USA Select team in the summer of 2010. "That kid from your school is the fastest guy I've ever played against."

Shoot first - More assists than Knight, much better 2.0 A/T ratio (to Knight's 1.3). Prior to this year he's always been a willing passer. His decision making is questionable at times, in terms of when to shoot and when to pass, but he's never been shoot first until this year where he had to carry the offensive load for his team.

If you think Knight's a better prospect than Kemba because Knight's younger, and Kemba might be too small for the NBA? Fine. That's at least true. The stuff about him being too slow, or a poor defender, or a SG masquerading as a PG aren't true.

I like Kemba over Knight. Its the intangibles that impress me.

However, I still think the Raptors should pick one of the bigs...Biyombo or Val (Biyombo is my pick).
Bayless can play and is somewhat proven ...while these other 2 guards, we're not sure whether their games will translate.
Prediction
Spurs in 7. Parker MVP. Lebron 6-17fg, 18pt, 8reb, 5 asst in game 7 LOSS.
The Heat will choke!

If there is a team that I would pick for Kemba Walker to go to, with fit and roster taken into consideration, it would be the Raptors or Cavaliers. I think the Raptors really need a guy like this who can take ownership a bit - I was hoping for DeRozan to do that (and still do), but I don't know if it's in his personality. When you have guys such as Andrea, DeMar, and Ed on your team (our 3 best players essentially) and your coach is Jay Triano, who's going to hold guys accountable? Reggie Evans? No, there's only so much a guy like him can do playing 20 mins/game (if that). It needs to come from your best players. Right now, the sense I get is, everybody is kind of willing to defer to one another, which often leads to a guy like Leandro Barbosa (or Sonny Weems) coming in, and taking shots away from them b/c no one else is willing to step up.

And truth be told, only way Kemba probably is going to succeed at the next level, is if the team puts the ball in his hands, similar to the way Jim Calhoun did after their seniors left. My concern with that, is DeMar deferring a bit too much to Kemba in certain situations. I don't want that, and it probably won't be a problem early on, because Kemba will be a rookie, but it could eventually be a problem down the road when Kemba starts to grow with the team.

So, bottom line, if you're the Raptors, and you want someone who has experience in leading a young team, and doing it well, then you might want to consider taking Walker with your pick. That is, if you're willing to give him the keys to the car as he earns your trust, and the trust of his teammates. If you don't want that, then take Knight, and let him, too, grow into that role, it just might take a bit longer.
