NCAA Basketball - Canadian Edition

Post#1 » by NeverGoingToWin » Mon Oct 3, 2011 11:14 pm

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketb ... basketball

This is the biggest player of the year trophy that you can win in the NCAA. Two Canadian prospects made their preseason top 50.

Kris Joseph, 6-7, Sr., F, Syracuse

"He's arguably the most talented player in our league with his guard skills. He could potentially be the highest draft pick of any of the returning Big East players. He's 6-7, but he doesn't need screens. He can beat you by himself. He's a pure pro prospect."

Andrew Nicholson, 6-9, Sr., F, St. Bonaventure

"Nicholson is fast, strong and efficient as a scorer and a defensive rebounder regardless of the opponent. He is also a very underrated passer and shot-blocker. He knows how to use his body to protect the ball and has a very high basketball IQ. His long wingspan and great bounce allow him to play above the rim."

Come closer to the regular season, I will start another daily Canadians in the NCAA thread, that seemed to be a popular thread. Some notables: Kris Joseph, Nicholson, Sacre, Olynyk, Kabongo, Ejim, Oluashuolu, Junior Cadougan, Mitrovic, Pangos, Powell, Bhullar etc. This will be a stellar year for Canadians in the NCAA.

Sonrise, good on ya to follow through on a bet.

Looking forward to the thread; it was always one I enjoyed flipping through last year.

D-I's Top 100 Players

98. Robert Sacre, Gonzaga (Sr., C)
The Zags' seven-footer gets to the line at will and shoots over 80 percent there. Barring injury he'll finish his career in 2012 as the Bulldogs' all-time career blocks leader. There's a good argument for him to rank a little higher (some iterations of this list had him way too high -- like in the 50s high), but I keep looking at Gonzaga's 2011 schedule and cringing at the number of sub-200 Kenpom rankings.

58. Kris Joseph, Syracuse (Sr., SF)
It's rare that you see a team with five players as similarly effective, per-possession, on offense as the 2011 Orange were with Joseph, Scoop Jardine, Dion Waiters, Brandon Triche, and C.J. Fair. The worst of the five was probably freshman Fair (110 offensive rating, 18 percent of possessions) and the best was probably Joseph (109 offensive rating, 23 percent of possessions). I'm ranking Joseph this much higher than those four primarily because only he and Fair separated themselves on defense and on the boards, and Fair's offense just doesn't stand up. Nor am I alone in my view of Joseph as the top dog -- he was the only Syracuse returnee to make an All-Big East team in 2011. I'm even sensing a general push to anoint Joseph as Syracuse's star, but that's where I have to disagree. The Orange will be a top-five team because they're the only squad in the country with five proven talents, not because any of those five are individually outstanding. I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see any of them finish the season as the team's star, I'd just be most surprised if Joseph disappeared.

53. Andrew Nicholson, St. Bonaventure (Sr., C)
Nicholson was rightfully selected to the All-Atlantic 10 first team as a junior, backed by a 108 offensive rating on 30 percent of possessions. The gap between him and Carl Jones on this list is small for two reasons: Saint Joseph's schedule was considerably better than St. Bonaventure's (thus making Jones's numbers more impressive), and Nicholson's extra year of age means he projects for less improvement.

79. Robert Sacre (senior center, Gonzaga). He's a man-child in the middle for the Zags, especially in the WCC. Can score in the post and is also an adept rebounder and shot-blocker. — J.G.

54. Andrew Nicholson (senior forward, St. Bonaventure). The last time the Bonnies had a forward this talented was, of course, Essie Hollis in the mid-'70s. Nicholson has become an incredibly effective player across the board. Help spread the word on him. — M.N.

40. Myck Kabongo (freshman guard, Texas). Texas hoops will be down, somewhat, but Kabongo -- with that name and all (first name pronounced as "Mike") -- will make Rick Barnes' team very watchable. Awesome athlete. — M.N.

22. Kris Joseph (senior forward, Syracuse). It's Joseph's turn to be the leader for an Orange team looking for its next go-to-guy. — J.B.

Barnes said Kabongo has all the tools to become the next great point guard for a program that has produced standouts such as T.J. Ford and D.J. Augustin.

"He's somewhere in between those two," Barnes said of Kabongo. "He's extremely fast like T.J., but T.J. would pace his game. Myck is a more full throttle. Forget the cruise control. He'd be great this weekend at Talledega. He can beat everyone down the floor with the ball, but he's going to learn to change his pace from time to time so our team can get into a flow."

     TJ Ford had change of pace...

On a serious note, if Kabongo has even less ability to slow his game down, then there go my hopes of drafting him. I love his personality and work ethic, but TJ would often beat his teamates down the court by such a wide margin that his only option would be to take it to the rim himself.

with his shooting he should be able to play in europe and for canada for as long as he wants. transfering that late in your college career is tough though

I hear Anthony Bennett is actually considering to play at Oregon next year. That would put him with fellow Canadian, Devoe Joseph

This is Joseph's last year.

Oregon's women are amazing and their football team is good. Those are the only good things I can say for them.
