*Update* Raptors re-branding v.1 - Focus Group

Post#1 » by Los Manos » Fri Jun 7, 2013 6:18 am

***Scroll down for Raptors Re-Brand.***

So I've spent a few days working on a Toronto Huskies re-brand with main logo and two secondary logo's along with home and away uniforms. The designs are very rough around the edges (most of it is hand-drawn and yet to be properly vectored) but I've spent long enough staring at it and need to now throw it open to the opinion of you guys and get some feedback before further developing it.

Tell me what you like, what you don't like and your conversation can guide me some and hopefully a bit of collaboration will push through a finished set of designs that make everyone happy.

I am a graphic designer but I don't ever get a chance to do anything sports-related so little side projects like this can be a lot of fun. You never know, maybe someone takes notice once we're done putting together a polished branding package that gets fan approval.

So go for it, rip it or praise it, let me know your thoughts.

(p.s. Mods, I know there are a few Huskies related threads on the front page but please keep this one separate as I hope to keep returning to it as I progress with the project. thanks)

With the Huskies re-brand mostly only going down well with those open to a name change, I thought it appropriate to attempt my take on a Raptors re-brand and again get the thoughts of the fanbase during the design process. If the Toronto Raptors are to celebrate their 20 year anniversary in 2016, the only path I wanted to go down was to really get the essence of the original branding back while giving everything a much needed facelift. Included are Primary, Secondary and Third logo's along with a jersey script. This is a re-brand that very much embraces the franchises' 90's roots while doing a clearer job representing the city of Toronto and Canada.

Once again let me know your thoughts.

WOW

**** amazing man. Best design I've seen so far, by a mile. It has that retro minimalist vibe that I absolutely love. Absolutely amazing work.

You've managed to make the husky logo look both fearsome and historic. I know you're from the UK and the football crest inspiration really shows (which I love). I've seriously creamed my pants.

MLSE needs to see this asap.

I'm not an advocate of the Huskies re-brand, but those jerseys are utterly gorgeous. Pure and elegant style, love pseudo belt effect, too. Nicely done!

You might was well rename us the Toronto Direwolves instead, with George RR Martin getting royalties.

wow great job...the jersey's are absolutely classic and the typeface is impeccable. didn't care too much but would definitely support a rebrand if it was being changed to this. only thing i'm not 100% sold on is the profile logo of the husky. a little too rigid and almost reminiscent of an oriental dragon/gargoyle, though forward-facing animal logos are pretty overdone anyway. the bottom right logo is nails though. amazing work overall man.

thanks!

I know the fanbase is 50/50 on the whole idea of a name change and they might be right. I really set out to answer the brief that TL has been hinting at - that this team needs to connect with the whole country while also projecting a "heritage" that is fitting. With the 2016 all-star game being the point of focus for any re-branding efforts, it's interesting that it's the 70th Anniversary of the Toronto Huskies. For me, I think it's best to take advantage of the basketball history we have in the city.

I like your work, and this really doesn't have anything do with your work. But, I really don't like the name 'Huskies'. Some of Toronto's biggest problems have been the perception around the league that it is cold. Some of the first things that pop into my head when I think of 'Huskies' is 'cold', 'north', 'Minnesota Timberwolves'. It seems (to me atleast) to carry some negative connotations, that we really probably don't want to emphasize, and is similar to the Timberwolves.

I think the Raptors mascot is awesome, and the name is perfectly fine. At this point, who cares if it came from a movie? It's as good a name as any.

All that said, as far as 'Huskies' logos go, I think you did a great job.

It was inspired by the direwolf banner but has been redrawn to take on more Husky-like qualities. I agree it's still not there though and needs a few more redraws to really get that Husky look that I was trying to get.

I've adapted the fur marks to hopefully look like a basketball net 'swishing'.

As I say, there is work to do to get that right!

Amazing work, only thing I'd do different is remove 'Huskies' from both logo's and perhaps even switch the location of both logo's with each other. Great job though

Cheers!

Very nice logo...I still love the name Raptors...I was wondering if you could some how redesign the Raptors jerseys and logo and we could have a comparison of what looks best...Maybe a Euro-inspired/English Premier league-inspired revamped Raptors would do wonders for our image just like how you made the husky look fierce and appealing...amazing work keep it up!!!!

Some images for inspiration not that you need it though ;) (didn't know it would be kinda of hard to find a dragon's crest )

AMAZING.. the best I've seen by FAR...

To improve this I would try to make the actual logo of the husky better. Someone posted a better alternative in another thread.. If you add something similar to that, to this overall brand.. it would be something that this franchise needs to do, I love the idea of letting the other teams in the NBA know that we were the first team to play an NBA game. We are the OG's of the NBA. Your re-brand shows it. Just need a better Husky logo (the actual Husky itself). Kudos to you.
