Why does Houston want a 1st round pick? Why would boston trade a first round pick? Confusing trade.

1) Because Houston wants a future asset for a disgruntled, redundant player in Asik
2) I'd have to assume it'd be lottery protected. Perhaps Rondo is coming back sooner than later, they've already played themselves out of the low lottery, and want to put together an elite defensive team anchored by Rondo, Green and Asik.

I think that was the initial plan during the summer but much like the Suns they started playing much better than expected and have almost taken themselves completely out of landing a top 3-5 pick. Plus they still get their best player back shortly and they're still in position to get some more high picks in the future courtesy of Billy King and the Brooklyn Nets.

In order to make future deals. 1st rounders are currency, and having two picks in this draft (plus additional assets; they have a pile of 2nds, Jones and whatever value remains in Motiejunas) gives them the ability to turn around and make other trades.

Would we, as a 3rd team, take such a package from Houston (via Boston) for Amir? We would have to add salary, Novak to Houston works.

Here are Boston's picks:

2014 first round draft pick from Brooklyn
Brooklyn will convey the less favorable of its 2014 1st round pick and Atlanta's 2014 1st round pick to Boston (via Atlanta's right to swap for Brooklyn) [Atlanta-Brooklyn, 7/11/2012 and then Boston-Brooklyn, 7/12/2013]

2015 first round draft pick from L.A. Clippers
L.A. Clippers' 2015 1st round pick to Boston [Boston-L.A. Clippers, 6/25/2013]

2015 second round draft pick from Sacramento
Sacramento's 2015 2nd round pick to Boston protected for selections 31-55 (if this pick falls within its protected range and is therefore not conveyed, then Sacramento's obligation to Boston will be extinguished) [Boston-Sacramento, 2/17/2009]

2016 first round draft pick from Brooklyn
Brooklyn's 2016 1st round pick to Boston [Boston-Brooklyn, 7/12/2013]

2017 first round draft pick from Brooklyn
Boston has the right to swap its 2017 1st round pick for Brooklyn's 2017 1st round pick; if Boston exercises this swap right, then Boston will convey its 2017 2nd round pick to Brooklyn protected for selections 31-45 (if this pick falls within its protected range and is therefore not conveyed, then Boston's obligation to Brooklyn will be extinguished) [Boston-Brooklyn, 7/12/2013]

2017 second round draft pick from Sacramento
Sacramento's 2017 2nd round pick to Boston protected for selections 31-55 (if this pick falls within its protected range and is therefore not conveyed, then Sacramento's obligation to Boston will be extinguished) [Boston-Sacramento, 2/24/2011]

2018 first round draft pick from Brooklyn
Brooklyn's 2018 1st round pick to Boston [Boston-Brooklyn, 7/12/2013]

Why wouldn't Houston want a 1st round pick?

I'd think Houston would be more in the win now mode. Where as Boston should be looking to the future.

If he was in win-now mode then he'd want a better player than Brandon Bass back for sure.

Morey is always thinking of the big picture, in this case he's looking at Kevin Love and LaMarcus Aldridge being free-agents in 2015 and is collecting assets to facilitate a sign and trade to bring in the 3rd star player at that time. If he could have landed such a player right now then I'm sure he would have done so.

Meanwhile he continues to inch forward, making his team better without mortgaging the future. He's the smartest GM in the league.

It will be in their best interest for the Celtics to beat the Nets every time they play.

Like the Suns, Ainge is flexible with his plans. They have enough assets to go either way, that's what a good GM does.

I'd imagine that the pick involved is the 2014 one from Brooklyn, simply because that stands to be Atlanta's pick and thus mid-round at best.

I'd kill a man for that 2016 Nets first, though...unprotected, and their cap is already spoken for in '15/'16 despite having only three players on the roster.

I don't understand why teams don't give us all these first round picks.. It's common sense really. First round pick? Send em to the Raptors!

thats a lot of value for Asik- and im not sure this makes Boston better- Bass and Lee are important rotation guys for them

I wonder if Amir could get somewhat similar value

Market for Asik is weak because of that 15 mill balloon payment and he's mainly a defensive player.

If you have a PF that can play with Dwight you can get Asik cheap right now. BOS is taking advantage of that. Looks like they want to be the new Bulls. Don't be surprised if Thibs goes back to BOS next year if CHI blows things up.

I expect the first round pick to be one of the worst ones BOS has or heavily protected. HOU has no real leverage it seems. Although BOS knows how hard it is to find C's, they were looking all last year.

Ok, so we're team #3. Would you trade Amir and Novak for that 2016 BKN pick, Lee and Bass in a flip from Houston? No 187 necessary.

Completely forgot, good point.

Although Bass came after Lee was already traded, both guys are familiar with Dwight.

Lee is a contract they want off the books. They also have Sully and Hump ready to step in for Bass, plus Olynyk at PF. Asik is a C and great team defender.

The market is also weak because Morey let out that there was a self-imposed Dec 19 deadline. That never helps your bargaining power. I know why they want a deal done by tomorrow, but you lose some leverage by putting yourself on the clock.

Also we have to remember that Morey can repackage Bass, Lee at the trade deadline if they can do the deal by tomorrow.

The first round pick will come in handy to get a better player then.

Lee got the boot because he missed a massive alley-oop layup. Felt bad for him.
