Reasons for Inferiority Complex

Post#1 » by jonny three time » Sat Apr 12, 2014 10:08 pm

The idea for this thread came after reading the most recent inferiority thread and the overwhelming desire to talk about why it's happening. If the reasons offend some of you, know that I'm throwing them out there as possiblities and not as accusations or insults. So, which of these reasons do you think leads to so many in this fanbase feeling inferior (and no it's not a Canadian thing) and craving attention so much.

1. Toronto mentality. It seems like the media and many people in the city are constantly needing to point out how great the city is and all it has to offer. How many times does a celebrity or athlete get asked what makes Toronto great, when they didn't even mention they thought that and they only just got into town. Newspapers, nightly newscasts and even just talking to people in Toronto, it's this never-ending theme that everyone regurgitates. So is it possible that this mentality has spilled over to the fanbase and ends up driving some people nuts? Seeing outsiders speak so poorly of the greatest team and greatest city in the world! Oh the audacity!

2. Age of posters/fans. Young people in general care more about what their peers think about them than older adults do. This isn't always the case but for the most part this is true. Has the high-school mentality spilled over to our fanbase and caused so many to dream of our team being the "big man on campus" when so often they're the loveable loser who flies under the radar? Is it something related to the average age of our fanbase and how young it is?

3. A heightened need for attention because of social media. Obviously popularity is a huge part of social media. Kids who are raised in a texting/facebook/whatever-else-is-cool-these-days world have a more heightened need for attention than young people of previous generations. How many friends do you have on facebook? How often are people talking about you? How many likes did you get? How many hits did your site get?... could all be leading to this need for recognition. There was a study out not long ago showing todays youth would rather be famous and not wealthy than to be wealthy and not famous, which I think is an incredibly interesting and could be a factor.

4. Being seen as a secondary sport in Canada. Having to live in a hockey country if you're not a fan of the game would aggrevate anyone. Why are we always on the secondary channels? Does seeing hockey as the lead story on every sports broadcast or sports section time and time again lead to the animosity that is now fueling the constant need for attention? Or is it just the surface reason that gets the bulk of the blame?

5. Being the only Canadian team in an American League. While some might take pride in this, others see it as a weird type of shame. Why do they always have to point out we're in a different country? Why point to what makes us unique? Why not give us the same attention as they would give an American market our size? Could this be coming from a place where they think America is cooler, or more important than Canada? Do they maybe feel a sense of shame being associated with Canada?

6. An underlying spite for the Raptors organization manifesting itself outwards. You know how a kid with **** parents can be the most proud of them and protective to crazy levels, or vice versa sometimes when a parent has a terrible kid and they go nuts when others speak badly of them. Is that happening on a less intense and emotional level here? You can see it in the threads too....."Why don't we get any respect" "because we've sucked for most of the last 20 years" "shut up man". Do some realize that the team doesn't deserve the respect yet, and rather than own it, live in denial of it and go the other way with animosity?

So which 2 reasons do you guys think are most responsible for the inferiority complex?

Because the team was garbage for 20 years? Don't bobcat fans feel inferior too?
