Comparing how well and how often teams take 3 pointers

From Reddit.
Houston is way way out there. They are really all about 3 Pts and then scoring at the paint.

To the top right is where teams shoot often and well. Chicago is actually doing fairly well at 3pointers, interestingly enough. I imagine Washington will go up a bit now that Beal is back.

Looking at the Raptors, we seem to take around the league average and don't shoot it all that well. SAS is near to us but they have both Mills and Belenelli missing.

Most interesting is how much variety there is among the top teams in the league.

I'm not sure the stats show it, but it always felt like the tops teams in the playoffs could drain three pointers, but didn't necessarily need to shoot a lot of them. Teams known for their three point attack like the Warriors and Trail Blazers, and of course the Rockets all fizzled out because defences lock down whatever you're best at.

Ball movement and taking the best available shot, and of course timely threes usually get you far.

Interesting chart, Houston almost appears to be an outlier while Brooklyn looks like they're at the center.

For the Raptors, I feel like Vasquez is someone who has been shooting 3's poorly and often. He attempts 3.6 per game while making 0.9 for an abysmal 25% 3-pt percentage.

Ross: 2.1/4.9
Patterson: 1.5/3.4
Lou Williams: 1/2.9
Lowry: 1.4/4.5
Derozan: 0.2/1.1

Essentially Vasquez is the worst 3- point shooter. He has the lowest percentage for someone who attempts at least 1.2 threes per game.

Ross: 42.8%
Patterson: 44.1%
Williams: 34.5%
Lowry: 31.1%
Derozan: 18.1%
Vasquez: 25%

Percentage w/out Vasquez: 34.18%
Percentage w/ Vasquez: 32.6%

It's not a weighted average, but, it's an approximate. Seems like we're a below-average 3-Point shooting team.

Derozan would actually be 18% if your 0.2/1.1 numbers are correct, which is far worse - the good thing is he only take one per game.

Interesting how you set the bar at 1.2 shots in order to call Vasquez the worst

It's funny to me how we use Demar in more of a SG role when his skills are better suited to the SF - and we use Ross at SF when his skills are better suited to the SG spot. I know they are somewhat interchangeable and Ross defends the tougher opponent, but it goes a ways in terms of role definition and fan expectation when positions are more accurately described. Ross is by far the better shooter and defender, while Demar is the better slasher and rebounder.

Lowry is steading back up to his 35% + clip. As long as Ross and 2Pat are near 40, then that's fine with me.

Return to Toronto Raptors
