Jerry Stackhouse is bringing a fresh perspective to the Toronto Raptors

Stackhouse continued coaching his aau team even after his son switched to football. Five of his aau players went on to play ncaa division 1 basketball this season, while jaye is a football freshman at north carolina, his dad’s alma mater.

Stackhouse sees the same teaching opportunity with the toronto raptors, especially with young players such as delon wright and canadian cory joseph. In an aim to add a recent nba player to their staff, the raptors hired stackhouse as an assistant coach this past off-season.

The two-time all-star brings experience gained with eight different nba teams, a great relationship with head coach dwane casey, and combination of smarts and toughness. And still fit at 40, stackhouse can match the physicality of the players on the court.

"he’s lean and mean," joseph said. "he still gets out there, bangs with us, a physical guy."

"all these guys, their ears are open," stackhouse said. "they’re attentive to what i’m saying because they know i’ve been out there and i’ve done it. I’ve sat in all of those seats — from being a star player to having to adjust my role, becoming the sixth man to being a guy later on in my career that just filled roles. Those seats are on every team.

"so it’s being able to really relate to these guys and know what they’re going through, not getting the minutes that they want, not getting the minutes that sometimes they deserve, and having to manage that and still be a good teammate."

Those are just the intangibles. On the court, Stackhouse — who was part of the Detroit Pistons team that dispatched Toronto in five games in the 2002 playoffs — said nothing is lost on him.

"To be able to play at this level for almost 20 years, there’s nothing that I haven’t seen or dealt with from an X and Os standpoint," he said. "Now it’s just being able to find creative ways to get the message to the players."

The 24-year-old Joseph called Stackhouse "a mentor."

"He’s been helping me a lot in terms of staying confident, helping me learn the system. I know he just got here too but we’ve been learning together and he’s been helping me a lot with my shot, staying on me to get better," Joseph said.

I am telling you man, one of the underrated acquisitions of this team in the off season. The intagibles, toughness and experience he brings to this team is invaluable. I really hope he gets through to our younger guys, especially with development. As the article mentioned, guys like Delon, Cory and Norm can really learn from him.

Stack is better as a coach than as a player; I'm glad he's with us.

Some more hype for the Raptors this year. Stackhouse had a similar game to derozan maybe he can help him out his year.

Huh, young stack was a premier nba player. Put 20 on Jordans head. Was going for 20 a game every night.

Young Stackhouse was an inefficient high volume scorer just like Demar is today. Back then though, the league favoured mediocre efficiency mid-range ISO scorers. It's no surprise that the Pistons got better when they traded him for Rip Hamilton, while also primarily a mid-range scorer did so off the ball and at a more efficient clip.

I'd say Stack's best years came when he was 6th man on those mid-2000's Mavs teams. He was a big contributor on the '06 team that was 2 wins short of a championship. I also recall him developing a great corner 3 during those later years... a similar career path I can see Demar going down.

Even when he was a role-player with the Bucks, he was a damn good one. He brought defence, toughness, post ups and the occasional 3 pointer. He was very underrated in his role.

He's a great person to bring into the coaching staff imo.

I have no idea about his coaching ability, not having watched his other team.

Didn't someone make the comment that DD is Stack 2.0 a couple days ago? I believe it was based on near identical shooting percentages and shot selection. Stack's play has faded from my memory, as have so many other things from that long ago. But when I read 2 time all-star describing him in the article, that made me wonder if DD will ever get that second all-star nomination and end his career with the same distinction.

Hopefully he does a good job. I imagine players will respect and listen to him more than some of the other assistants

I'm glad we finally got a former player as an assistant. Tyronn Lue was key in helping Blatt transition to the NBA and helped bridge the gap between players and coaches. Luke Walton was a key assistant when G state won and now he is interning as head coach until Kerr is back.

Its good to have a guy that the players can relate to. Glad to have Stack

Totally forgot we hired him as an assistant coach, I like what I'm seeing so far but I wouldn't read into anything because Casey is still the head coach.

Speaking as a former fan of his, I realized over the years Stackhouse was nothing really special. He's sort of like DeRozan in a way, aesthetically they have the structure to have a superstar's game, but not the effectiveness for it. Although Stackhouse was better because he could play great defense.

I'm confused, really and truly but really it does makes sense around here actually. If Demar is hated then of course a guy like jerry Stackhouse will not be liked. But wherever Jerry played he was a good player and a threat. Det / Dallas. He was a star in Det a star, Jerry Stackhouse was a star at one point in time in the nba during some of the NBAs glory days. Dude had his own shoe for christ sakes. If he arrived in Dallas a few years earlier my boy Dirk would probably have more than 1 ring

Stack was a Raptor killer. It feels good to not see him on the opposing team's side for a change.

I imagine that Magloire and others who are still with the Raptors are OK, but an outspoken guy that can talk to the young Raptors players while still getting them to follow the coaches' gameplans and training is probably pretty important.

Not sure he'll actually help much with skills or training or anything, but I bet he helps just keeping the Raptors in line better than our older staff alone.

I like his no BS attitude, we probably need that with all this "cabal" nonsense we got from last year

Stackhouse is probably one of the most overrated players of his day. He was a high usage, high volume, low efficiency player on mostly bad teams (as a starter). His advance stats aren't too flattering either. He only made the playoffs twice as a legit starter. The rest of the time he was in more of a backup, veteran presence, ring chaser type deal. He was also a bit of headcase/prima donna.

I will give him credit though, the guy never backed down and was a tough defender. He was really hard nosed. I think he'll be a decent coach.; especially if he can bring that mentality to the team. I just wouldn't say he is the best example of a good player. It's not surprising people compare Demar to him. Their stats are pretty similar; well outside of the defensive stuff and being hard nosed.

I have made the comment multiple times. He was an aggressive driver who drew fouls, shot a weak percentage and had no three-point shot. He was a reasonable passer and had the ability to play strong defense.

Stack was a bit better than DeRozan, but considerably overrated on the basis of volume scoring/per-game averages.

I remember that Detroit series, he sucked all game but then had that clutch mid range jumper

The season Stack was dropping 30 ppg was his most hilarious.

He was the poster child for empty stats that season. Mind you, the Pistons sucked back then & there was no one else that could score on that team

going in line with our annual Detroit comparison..does this mean that we need to trade DD for a RIP counterpart?
