Looks like he has no confidence in his shot right now. He's missing badly.
I have some theory's.
Too much focus on other parts of his game (dribbling)
Lack of understanding of what a good shot is and turning down good looks for contested shots. I would love to see him pull up and shoot with confidence every time a defender goes under a screen or sags off him at the perimeter and just live with the results.
Different form on his jump shot from his freethrows leads to inconsistent approach during game.
Lack of a compact, consistent shooting stroke (too many moving parts, too many variables)
Not looking to actually hit his shots, just looking to get fouled.
Doesn't practice shooting at game speed...instead practices obscure situational shooting
Confidence (seems like something he struggles with at times)
Thinking too much/cares to much (Good shooters have no concience...think every shot is going in...just let it fly and trust that they've put in the time)
Dwayne Casey coaching somehow eroding the players confidence on offense...I think a good offensive coach would do wonders for his game.
Statistically, he's never had a great mid range jumper. Probably a lot of that is due to taking far too many contested shots. His strength has always been attacking the rim and getting to the FT line.
Blaming every players faults and deficiencies on the coach needs to stop however. The coach has the ball in his hands zero times a game.

The mid-range is his "game" but he's never been all that good at it. Demar's strength is at the rim.

Re: What happened to Demar's shot?
I don't mind Demar, but it is kinda late to be asking this. Lol. It has never been good, and I am pretty sure it is form. No coach we have had has penalized him for it, so he had no reason to fix it. Let's hope to see that change someday soon, or the 2nd round will be a myth for us.

Re: What happened to Demar's shot?
It's a combination of all of those things you mentioned. But this year specifically, I am noticing that yes he's looking to draw fouls more rather then just hit the shot. If he can't pump fake his man, he's most likely not taking it. He's also driving the lane more and taking less shots on the perimeter in general I think. It seems more like 50-50 this year rather then 70-30 in favor of mid range J's last year. I mean, I could be wrong and the numbers may have normalized now.

Re: What happened to Demar's shot?
It was never great, but a couple of years ago it was looking like it was coming around. But this year and last year it seems to have regressed.
The point I'm trying to make is that when he first came into the league he couldn't shoot and wouldn't shoot, but after a couple of years he worked at it and showed some improvement. It seemed as though things were going in the right direction. This year and last year he's really regressed though. I know he's a hard worker, but if you're practicing the wrong things, you're reinforcing bad habits. I'd love to see him address this since he seems to want to become a complete player (showing improvements in dribbling, passing and defence) His lack of a reliable shot is really a glaring hole in his game.

I think the problem is people (the internet, the coaching staff, analytic teams, everybody else, some other people, aliens) have been telling him its a bad shot, this has lead to him relying more on pumpfakes to draw fouls and passing the ball when he picks it up in the midrange area more often, which could cause more hesitation in situations where usually he'd jack up a selfish jumpshot.
Though I could be totally wrong IDK.
Let's playin for 9th!
