Should the Raps consider signing Matt Bonner to a minimum contract as their 15th man?

Matt Bonner for 15th roster spot?

Post#1 » by PoeltlTheToeltl » Thu Jul 14, 2016 3:40 am

Matt Bonner was interviewed on PTS with Bob McCown and Damien Cox today, mostly to discuss Tim Duncan's retirement.

However, a large portion of the interview turned to the topic of Bonner's own status, the fact that he's a free agent, and how finding a team to play on next year is a major uncertainty at this point in his career.

Without quoting things verbatim, essentially, Bonner isn't expecting to make much more than the vet minimum, assuming he can find a team looking for a career 41% 3pt shooting stretch 4, who at 36 is probably only good for situational minutes.

When the hosts mentioned that they knew of a team that might be looking for just that, Bonner was a little shocked and obviously thrilled at the mere prospect of returning to the Raptors, calling it a "dream come true" if it were to happen.

While he's generally seen as a defensive liability, the return of a fan favourite on a minimum deal who can hit from outside, and has spent the last decade playing for Pop and the Spurs... well, I think it would be a great addition for us. He'd essentially be a player-coach, but he'd be a tremendous asset to our young guys, in my opinion.

When the hosts mentioned that they'd suggest the signing directly during their interview with Masai later this week, Bonner sounded nothing short of giddy at the idea, but begged them to please not embarrass him.

With the mix of youth and mid-prime players on this team, I think Bonner would be ideal to fill out the roster.

Any thoughts?

No thanks to be honest. I like the guy. But he brings almost nothing to the table. Hes not the shooter he use to be either.

Honestly, it's not a bad thought at all for a contending team full of veterans and and proven young players. However, we can't spare that roster spot on him as we have a few roster spots tied up to unproven "farm" players.

A big SF who can shoot the 3 should be target.

Even though 4 point guards is insane it would mean it is a certainty Fred VV gets cut. Kinda pulling for Fred to make this team.

I think we need some SF depth. DC can get hurt and Ross is inconsistent plus JJ gone.

I like him a lot too. He would big for Bruno's development in the 905 as well. Perfect 3rd stringer if one of our guards are moved.

Love Bonner but we still have a hole to fill. Need a SF in case Carroll gets hurt since Ross won't be able to handle it on his own. Who can also play as a small ball stretch 4...One of those Swiss army knife types

Vet SF who can still contribute. Dorrell Wright is one guy I'd look at. Chase Budinger is another player as well.

I'd still want to give it to Deandre Daniels, might as well sign him now, how long will we play this maybe next year bird rights game? It isn't like we can't trade him. With the value of rookie deals and the hope they develop into something, someone would take a flier on him for a future 2nd.

These 2 or Copeland would be my picks.

Agreed. This type of player needs to be the target.

Ujiri: Hey...We're gonna get it. I don't know when it'll be, but we're gonna get it. Just like I said we'll get the first one and I said I didn't know when we'd get it...But we will. Guarantee you we will.

Right fit as a big 3, but he's looked awful in Summer League. No handle whatsoever. I'd rather have Bruno out there standing in the corner and taking 3s and otherwise not allowed to touch the ball, maybe getting a block or 2 on the other end.
Where's the D?
