Do the raptors have a sports psychologist?

Post#1 » by MavCarter » Sat Feb 18, 2017 5:10 am

I remember BC hired one back in 2009 but she apparently doesn't work with the team anymore. Does anyone know if we currently have one or why we don't utilize sports psychology?

It's pretty clear the raptors melt under pressure, not just lowry/derozan but a lot of our guys seem to disappear when the lights are turned on (big games, playoffs). Obviously this isn't the only thing sports psychology works on but I was just reading a pretty good article on the blue jays new high performance department with their director talking about possibly training players minds to zone out pressure. Curious to know if the raptors do anything similar (doesn't look like it judging by our playoff performances). We might not change much with our current vets but it would be a decent tool to use with young players that we draft and groom.

Why do people on here think we are "so bad" in pressure? We literally came back just last game from an 18 point deficit. In the playoff run last year we came back from 1-0 deficits twice. We took 2 games from CLE after being down 2-0. This team doesn't really "disappear" with the lights on at all.
What an absolute failure and disaster this franchise is, ran by one of the most incompetent front offices in the league.

I've literally never seen a team as scared as the raptors playing in front of their own crowd in game 1 of the playoffs

I'm pretty sure every professional team has some type of encounter with a sports psychologist. It's not like they are really going to make a difference. They aren't people whisperers.

Do teams really need a full time psych? Seems like it would be easier to just send players to one if needed.

You guys are really underestimating the amount of resources that go into the mental side of the game. Raps aren't going to advertise exactly what they do.
I believe in Masai.

Lowry needs a team of psychologists following him around the clock and studying him like the elephant man. That is the only way I see him over coming these mental hurdles.

It really is a cold harsh reality about lowry, and to an extent demar and casey. That they are good, but not truly elite high performers. I dont think a psychologist can make much of a difference at this point.

Im enjoying the ride, but the sooner we move on from this core, the better it is for the franchise

Have you considered that the Raptors aren't that good? I'm not being facetious. DD and KL are hard working players who give it their all as often as possible, and most of our team plays at that level. I think this team simply underperforms when the "pressure" is on because they hit their ceiling.
