Gary Trent Jr. - Fair Contract Offer?

Post#1 » by Bentley1225 » Sun Mar 24, 2024 9:59 pm

Trent is on a $18.6 million player option for this season, will be 25.5 this summer and had played 4 seasons with Raps getting starter like minutes. I assume the front office feels Dick isn’t ready to be a starter at the 2 but perhaps development wise he might be to start ‘26-27 season.

As a result, I get feeling Raps would prefer a 2+1 term for GTj. Based on that, what’s a fair contract offer this summer?

0 (pass)

I prefer him off the bench. Not as a starter who is taking a lot of shots.

Someone will offer him 3 year mid-level exemption on open market

3 years, $45 million is likely going to be what Raps need to offer to retain him.

He wants to be a starter and one of our primary scorers. So just I would pass on him and give that spot to Gradey or Ochai.

source?

He hasn’t said a word about his role since getting here and is taking a career low FGA (since arriving here) this season.
What an absolute failure and disaster this franchise is, ran by one of the most incompetent front offices in the league.

I think 2 years $30 million makes sense for both sides.

I am not a fan of bringing him back but if no good uses of capspace present themselves, perhaps you can give him a 2/40 with team option contract like Bruce Brown got to preserve the salary slot and create a virtual expiring for next deadline.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise….

I should have used the word probably.
He has been +20% usage in his career. Im "assuming" that there's no way he wants to be benched or take a pay cut or reduce his role. He is 25 yrs old.

Almost takes as much as our core.

Seth Curry makes $4 mill/yr. Double that for Trent would/should be (a) market value and (b) a massive overpay.

None of these contracts. Check what Beasley and Monk got on the open market off similar type seasons. Nobody is paying big money to these gunner types anymore. It will be interesting to see what Monk gets this summer, he's the much better player but I'm not expecting him to crack 20m AAV. He might not even get much of a raise from his current deal and probably will settle for MLE if I was betting on it.

Trent is a pro, and will take on whatever role he's given. Gradey is improving steadily, but I think he needs to start next year coming off the bench. That will likely change as the year progresses. Ochai is a bench guy, period. Trent, at the right price, makes sense to start next fall. There are lots of teams who need shooting, and who will have the NTMLE available. A small premium on that, maybe $14 million 1st year on a 2 years plus player option should be enough to keep him. It's also a very tradable amount should we choose to move him later.

Trent is a professional and he is improving in some ways every year. I would keep him on a 3 year deal and start him until there's a large 3+D player available for trade or Dick grows to be better than Trent.

Just don't outbid yourself. I'm not a fan of his game, but some people will tell you that you have to keep a 25 year-old with his resume.

Is the best yet to come? I don't see it.

3 years, $45 million with 3rd year team option I think is a fair offer.
