12x growth in legal sports gambling in 4 years. That's 86.5% annualized over this period. The sports leagues are happy, but it's just a cash siphon on families and individuals with their own issues.

The Government: 'We are taking measures to prevent people from the dangers of cigarettes'

Also the Government: 'How about some weed, lotto or a parlay?'

To be fair, at least weed is not allowed to advertise.

Now, why is alcohol and the lottery allowed I have no clue.

IMO - anything addictive should just be nuked from public advertising. Weed, Alcohol, Gambling. I can live with the lotteries as at least generally the "profits" on those are used for good (Hospital home lotteries, etc.)
What an absolute failure and disaster this franchise is, ran by one of the most incompetent front offices in the league.

I agree on the advertising bit.

Frankly I never understood why so many people are against broad taxation to pay for services that are essential to our society but are okay with predatory gambling and lottery practices that are proven to target population with low economic mobility. Sure there is a 1 in ~14,000,000 chance you might win the 6/49, but for most people it is a tax they get suckered into by advertising and the hope of breaking out of an economic system that devalued them in the first place.

I find greasy takeout shawarma addicting as well. Can we also do away with fast food advertising?

Well, we know the answer to that.

You do raise a good point about where to draw the line for what is "addictive" and what isn't. Many things that are bad for us in large doses also happen to be quite addictive. Sugar is one of the most addictive substances, and is terrible for your body and wallet in large quantities, but are we going to do anything about Coke and Pepsi ads? Are we going to ban sugary juice boxes for kids? How much taxpayer money are we spending each year on diabetes?

Trying to create legislation based on the "addictiveness" of products is probably a huge legal rat hole.

I think most people can see the differences between what alcohol, drugs, and gambling can do to a person/family vs what Pepsi can do.

Last time I checked, not many people are going into intense debt to feed their Pepsi addictions, nor are they putting their health anywhere near as at risk as you do with alcohol or cigarettes.

But as we advance as a society, I am sure we will get to the point where we start to phase out things like soft drinks. It would be been incomprehensible in the 50s to suggest smoking be banned - yet some places are doing just that.

betting in sports is just gonna make this kind of thing way more prominent with athletes, especially fringe pros that know they might not get a next paycheck.

the NBA should also be looking at referees way more closely imo. too much shady stuff goes on with those guys game in and game out.

They'll do everything to not look at the refs. Didn't they stop the investigation on Donaughy? If it comes out that they're shady (which I'm sure some are) it would hurt the league and their ability to make money off betting.

They did their best to make Donaghy out to be a rogue, lone ranger. But we all know (looking at you Foster, and Malloy).

Literally everything can be argued to be addictive to some people, ban everything!

That said I would be fine with a ban on alcohol, gambling, cigarettes. Arguably fast food should be as well. Things that straight up destroy your body/life for the average person, I wouldn't be totally against it.

Slippery slope and all that though.

Silver wouldn’t say this without strong evidence. He said something similar before Ja Morant’s big suspension this summer. Porter is in big trouble.

They finally have a reason to ban Draymond if they want.

How much did he cost the sportsbooks during the Klay Thompson return game.
People bet heavy on all his under props, and played only a few seconds.

He perma-banned.

Although I'm not sure the league has to do anything. What NBA team would ever give him a contract going forward? What players would want to play with him, would pass the ball to him?

This isn't some minor infraction, like beating your gf within an inch of her life, or pushing her downstairs, or raping a woman. And then paying them to shut up.
