I don't want to derail but everyone here going ballistic after hearing he bet the Raptors to lose = criminal activity? So native, did you know only 1 banker went to jail for the entire 2008 GFC? There are much worse crimes that go unpunished than Jontay stealing some money from gamblers

Anti-match fixing and betting fraud laws are not strong in Canada or the USA, but it is still illegal.

So Jontay might face criminal charges, particularly if the NBA and/or DraftKings wants to send a strong message to any athlete who might consider doing what Porter did.

Canada does have a law, however, that prohibits cheating in betting with an intent to defraud.

Section 209 of the Criminal Code of Canada says:

Everyone who, with intent to defraud any person, cheats while playing a game or in holding the stakes for a game or in betting is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years.

Canada also has various other statutes, similar to the United States, which prohibit conduct that often accompanies match-fixing.

Don't know how anyone here is surprised he got banned for life. He made bets on himself for the under, and on his team to lose in games he was involved it. It goes straight to the integrity of the game.

It's not like he was betting the over on himself, which would also be bad cause it would impact how he would try and play. Betting the under is much worse.

There were also a million ways for him to be on the NBA that would not have been this bad. Again could have bet in games he wasn't playing and not on himself. Could have bet on other NBA teams. Still things that would have gotten him in trouble but not the same way.

He elected the worst way, and the most scummy way to do these bets.

It's pretty funny how that bet was even allowed to be placed in the first place. I would guess they never had any intention of paying it out and were going to dig into it the moment it was.

I think he would probably get asked in that lawsuit by a decent lawyer "Johntay if your gambling addiction was so bad, why did you not place bets on other NBA games or players? Why these specific bets playing the under on yourself? Why not other sports? Why not gamble in the other million ways that are allowed, or at the very least less egregiously against the integrity of the game?", and that would be that. It would already be a nothing lawsuit before that, let alone given that issue with it.
