Matt Bonner to play for Canada in 2010

Post#1 » by Luv 4 da game » Fri Sep 11, 2009 2:13 pm

Toronto Sun

The Red Rocket will be wearing red and white at the world basketball championships next summer.

Canadian men's coach Leo Rautins said former Raptors forward Matt Bonner almost certainly will have his paperwork completed in time to play for Canada at the 2010 worlds in Turkey.

Bonner, who started 67 games for the San Antonio Spurs last season, has taken the necessary steps to acquire Canadian citizenship. He married a Toronto girl and spends much off the off-season in Canada. Rautins said that almost immediately after the Canadian team qualified for the 2010 worlds last week in Puerto Rico, team officials began receiving text messages from Bonner.

A bit on Magloire as well

Rautins added that Toronto native Jamaal Magloire, a centre with the Miami Heat, is also on board to play at the worlds. Magloire has been criticized in the past for not playing for the national side during his time in the NBA.

A wonderful representative for humanity.

Magloire isnt good anymore but he is a big body. I hold a small grudge against him but he could help us.

Joel Anthony/Jamal Magloire
Matt Bonner/Jesse Young
Tristan Thompson/Carl English
Olu Famutimi/Andy Rautins
Steve Nash/Jermaine Anderson

I think we could finish top 4 with that team.

He looks and acts more Canadian than most Torontonians, Not Canadians.
Toronto ain't Canada.
He demeanor epitomizes the rural Canuck.

So that leaves out that big kid from carlton. Douchnozzle or dornekizzle.
He was the one hitting clutch 3's, no?

Could you imagine, Nash playing for the nat. team again?
Dag. Amazing.
Not gonna happen, but it'd be great.

We'd actually have a decent big man rotation if all our bigs played (Dally, Bonner, Anthony and Magloire). And if Steve Nash was there to feed the beasts . . .

Absolute pipe dream, which is never gonna happen (Nash and Dally especially are basically locks to never play for Canada again), but fun to think about regardless :)

Jamal Magloire was never willing to play for Canada and now you think he'll come off the bench? I doubt it.

I don't want him anywhere near the team, he'll be nothing but a distraction.

the only thing i may like about Magloire is him being a big versus countries like Argentina.

otherwise, dude probably will enter team practices with stars in his eyes and will think all plays should run through him.

by the way, were there ever any rumblings about Magloire being on the juice? talk about a player who fell from "stardom" damn quick.

I think Bonner is much more suited to the international game than Dalembert, especially since this team lives and dies by the three.

I agree that Magloire isn't worth the roster spot anymore, he didn't need the national team, now the national team doesn't need him. I don't understand Leo's desire to get him on the team, especially after the Dalembert affair.

Bonner will fit in perfectly, the one thing team Canada lacked was a floor spacing big.

Magloire will hopefully back out before then cause he's washed up now and will be even worse a year from now. He isn't nearly as suited for International ball as Anthony is.

I love Matt Bonner as a person, but do we really want him on Canada's team?
He can do NOTHING except shoot. He's a liability defensively. He slows down the offence because he just stands around. I remember being SOO HAPPY when he was traded. He does hustle, but everyone on team Canada hustles.
It would be cool to see him playing for team Canada, but I'm not sure how much he'd really help us.
