Rookie Preseason Stats

Post#1 » by LLJ » Sun Oct 11, 2009 2:13 am

Just for those interested because I haven't seen anyone talk much about them so far.

For scoring I've posted all the guys above DeMar, and notable guys below DeMar who we've discussed on this board in the past. I've also thrown in any shooting % that stands out as really bad or really good.

PPG

1 * Jeff Teague , 19.0 ppg (1 game only so far)
2 * Brandon Jennings , 16 ppg
3 * Sam Young , 15.5 ppg
4 * Taj Gibson , 14.5 ppg
5 * Jonny Flynn , 14 ppg, 33% shooting
6 * Chase Budinger , 13.3 ppg
7 * Tyreke Evans , 13 ppg
8 * DeJuan Blair , 12.5 ppg
9 * James Harden , 12 ppg, 36% shooting
10 * Terrence Williams , 11.5 ppg
11 * James Johnson , 11 ppg, 33% shooting
12 * Derrick Brown , 10 ppg
13 * DeMar DeRozan , 9.7 ppg
14 * Derrick Byars , 9.5
14 * Toney Douglas , 9.5
16 * Jodie Meeks , 8.5
17 * Rodrigue Beaubois ,
17 * Omri Casspi ,
17 * Earl Clark , 8 ppg
17 * A.J. Price ,
21 * Gerald Henderson , 7.5 ppg, 28% shooting
22 * Stephen Curry , 7.3 ppg, 25% shooting
23 * DeMarre Carroll ,
23 * Jordan Hill , 7.0 ppg
25 * Jermaine Taylor ,
26 * Jon Brockman ,
27 * Jrue Holiday , 6.0 ppg
27 * Hasheem Thabeet , 6.0 ppg, 83% shooting
29 * Trey Gilder ,
29 * Lester Hudson ,
31 * Eric Maynor ,
32 * Austin Daye , 4.0 ppg
32 * Wayne Ellington ,
32 * Serge Ibaka ,
32 * Luke Nevill ,

Rebounds (I stopped the list [out of 50] at DeMar)

1 * DeJuan Blair , 10.5
2 * Taj Gibson , 7.0
3 * Jon Brockman , 6.0
3 * Terrence Williams , 6.0
5 * DeMarre Carroll , 5.5
5 * Hasheem Thabeet , 5.5
7 * Derrick Byars , 5.0
7 * Earl Clark , 5.0
9 * Toney Douglas , 9.4
9 * Tyreke Evans , 4.5
9 * Sam Young , 4.5
12 * Chase Budinger , 4.0
12 * James Harden , 4.0
12 * Jordan Hill , 4.0
12 * James Johnson , 4.0
16 * Austin Daye , 3.5
17 * DeMar DeRozan , 3.3

Assists (I listed some TO numbers, but honestly I think right now it's even more meaningless than these preseason stats cuz rookies always tend to turn over the ball a lot)

1. Stephen Curry, 7.0 (3 TOs per)
2. Brandon Jennings, 5.5 (3.5 TOs per)
3. Jonny Flynn, 4.0 (4.0 TOs per)
4. Eric Maynor, 3.7
5. A.J. Price, 3.5
6. Toney Douglas, 3.0
7. Tyreke Evans, 3.0 (3.5 TOs per)
21. DeMar DeRozan, 1.3

Anyway, overall there aren't really any standout rookies so far in the preseason. The best game from a rookie so far is Blair's 19 rebound game. Also, Blake Griffin just started last night. He had 8 points and 5 rebounds in 21 minutes.

Curry is really forcing it, and he doesn't have the athleticism to play like that unlike Iverson. He really needs to slow it down and play smart to succeed in the NBA. But he's shown great anticipation and hands so far too.

Interesting tidbit--Andrea Bargnani has made the most field goals out of anybody in the preseason while he's only ninth in field goals attempted.

Highly impressed by Dejuan Blair so far. Total sleeper pick that a lot of people felt couldn't cope with the NBA because of his height and style of play.

Uh not really they expected a cleanup big a la Millsap or Bass except then it turned out he had no ACLs.

Jeff Teague was such a steal at 19.

Like most of the rookies so far, though, Teague's game doesn't show much of anything else except scoring.

I can't stress how unremarkable these rookie stats are so far. I actually expected better when I checked. Wade and LeBron were putting up really impressive boxscores in their first few preseason games as rookies. Even Bosh's first few preseason games were really impressive in comparison to these guys.

Oh well, still too early.

Blake Griffin has only played one game, and it's coming off of a minor injury, so I'd look for his numbers to increase as he gets going.

I don't think that's what people thought of him. He was projected as high as top 10 and then it was revealed he had potential knee issues. It wasn't until then that his stock dropped way off, so I think it's pretty unreasonable to blame his game for where he was drafted.

Taj Gibson is a young Kevin Garnett. He is a bit old for a rook (24) but he plays solid D and a good rebounder. James Johnson is compared by some to Paul Pierce but more athletic.I think Tyrus Thomas better look out.But its only preseason.

I haven't seen chase budinger play but from his stats. he looks to be a steal in the 2nd round. Even Blair.

Stephen had 18-7-7 last night. Great preseason game for him.
