OT: I just played ball with Ty Lawson

Post#1 » by BlackIce » Fri Mar 26, 2010 3:14 am

He was at the YMCA, with an assistant coach (maybe trainer?), and some other guy. He's amazing and it was a really cool experience, he killed me of course. So quick, and strong. The assistant coach was this white guy, about 50, and he was amazing. So fundamentally sound, he was schooling Lawson on a few plays. They were doing drills and played a few games against the guys there. I figured since I frequent this site I would share, he gave some guy court-side seats to the game against the Raps as well which was nice.

I told him I watched him, Ellington, and Handsbrough at NC and even though I'm a Ohio State fan, I couldn't help rooting for them. I also told him I think Handsbrough is going to be a bust and got drafted way to high. He laughed and said that he agreed with me. The assistant soach said that a rebounder, and high energy, unselfish player like that will always find a way to help a team. Lawson laughed and said "unselfish"??

That's pretty cool. Where was this? It surprises me that they'd be playing at the YMCA when they could be practicing with NBAers. Maybe he needs a confidence boost?

Damn that's awesome. Do you know why he gave courtside seats to that guy?

Metro YMCA. He said he was injured and I was surprised he was there as well. He’s like 5’11, and isn't known to be a strong NBA shooter. He was hitting shot after shot after shot, during their drills.

Hansborough is most definitely not a bust, he put up a solid rookie season and should be a great 6th man/3rd big for years to come.

Sounded like a memorable experience.

As for the shooting, that doesn't surprise me. Most if not all NBA players can nail a majority of their shots during drills, practice, etc. When Pops was on the team, you'd always see him in the background on Raptors Today hitting shots during a drill like it was absolutely nothing.

Nice. It sounds like he's a real chill dude.

I'm guessing this was taken at the YMCA:

HAHA just what I was going to say. No matter how you slice it that's not a good rookie season.

I doubt he'd say that Hansborough is a bust strictly because he wouldn't need to slander his friend to some random.

Your story is a bust.

He might have shot 36% but the guy is really really good at drawing fouls. His FTA/36 is 8, for comparisons sake Chris Bosh's career average is 7.2 and career high is 8.4. Yeah his FG% is bad but if you include his FTA his efficiency becomes really bad instead of Horrendous like his FG% suggests, . He's a monster on the offensive glass, i dunno where he ranks but he should be up there, his offensive rebounding rate is higher than Dwight's. He also keeps his turnovers down and plays underrated defence. Yeah he needs to finish inside much better but he's not a bust guys, his offensive rebounding and ability to draw fouls alone is gonna keep him in the league for a long time.

yeah the downtown atmosphere is pretty crazy, you never know who you will run into. I ran into Sonny Weems just last week randomly. Didn't bother to make a thread though, kind of like a regular thing you know?
