Well the way he described it is that Phila gets the better of the two pick in 2010.

In today's Fab 5 at 5 today on 1320, K-Fan Larry H. Miller revealed what the protections are on the Jazz first round pick.

Larry said this wasn't exactly right but is close.

I'm assuming that Philly gets the NY pick in 2010 only in the case that
A- it's higher than the Jazz pick
AND
B- it's below #21

That's my take, but, it's just conjecture.

The other fact is that that is going to be a potentially valuable bargaining chip if the Jazz wanted to sexy up a trade for a dog of a contract or player(s). I imagine getting rid of Collins or Harp or Hart or Price would be a helluva lot easier if the Jazz could use that pck. While everyone seems to think it's a lock for a top 3, not saying it couldn't end up that way, I am not overy convinced. Especially in a league where the Celtics went from worst to best in a season. Just remember a lot can happen with that pick in 2 and a half seasons.

The Knicks pick in 2010 is unprotected so the Jazz would get it (assuming it is protected in 2008 and 2009).

If the Knicks pick in 2010 is between picks #1-21, the Jazz get it but do not pass it on to the 76ers because of the protection built into the Giricek/Korver trade.

If the Knicks pick in 2010 is between picks #22-30, then the Jazz would receive it from NY and pass it on to the 76ers to fill the obligations of this trade.

OK, so it has to be protected 1-21 or 11, 12, 13 and 14 are moot! One thing this may do is remove the NY pick from the bargaining table, since it is involved in this trade.

That is how I typed up the contract for Kevin.....er....wait....I wasn't supposed to say that.

This is how I'm reading the information I heard from David Locke and Larry Miller on 5 at 5 show last night. thefansports.com posted this summary on the website afterwards as a summary of their discussion.

Then on the unprotected nature of the NY pick to the Jazz, I pulled that from nbadraft.net's outstanding trades page:
"Utah receives a 2008 New York first-round pick (top 23 protected in 2008, top 22 protected in 2009 and unproteced in 2010)"

The draft is a huge, over rated crap shoot. every once in a blue moon there is a no brainer, but they are rare.

I think it is a good asset to facilitate trades for known commodities.

Draft choices are only important for their impact on the team, whether that is by trading it or using it. Most years only the top few choices are no-brainers and everything else is a crapshoot. If you can get value from the pick through a trade I am all for using the pick to improve the team.
