Is a 6 4 3 2 structure allowed? Isn't the cap hit a contract average, with the benefit being it's easier to trade a guy whos already paid?

Just why not AL Jeff for Iggy?

My premise is that 4 years from now we will start to compete:

Now Iggy is going to be 29 next year, and will likely opt out after next season to take advantage of re-upping for a 4 year contract that takes him from 30-33. Do we want a 33 year old SF who leans on his athleticism and who isn't a scorer at that age... when we begin to compete. Meaning will we want to re-up him again for 3 more years from age 34-36 when we start to compete?

I think the fact that Gay is 26, and would be 29 when we reup him during our competitive years is what I am most looking at. I also believe that because of his length, and shooting style he will produce better as he gets older. But the key is that 4 years from now when our team is really ready to compete he will still be in his prime.... 29-33.

We can't carry Gay at the contract figure. That is almost AK level cap-killer. He will have a to make a significant leap to justify that expense. Right now, he's almost the Al Jefferson of SFs. He gets tons of opportunities, but is middling efficient. He's not a particularly motivated defender, and he settles for long Js way too much. Good player, and he might get better, but I think you're getting the same problems you have with Al Jefferson, only moving them to the wing instead.

I'd rather get a defensive force in Iggy that can finish and produce solid scoring numbers for you as a complimentary option. His improving J might even make him a floor stretcher as he gets older. Also, he is likely to get re-signed for 10m-ish per season after his contract, which will be good value for him into his mid 30s, I believe.

Gay is getting paid like a superstar but not even quit producing like a star.
