Is Will Hardy among the best coaches in the NBA?

Post#1 » by AGE1207 » Tue Jan 16, 2024 8:10 pm

Seriously, a 22 - 20 record halfway with 2 starters that probably wouldn’t make the bench on most teams. No ego’s, everyone buying into “team basketball” and last but not least, just about each player’s (trade) value has increased.
As if last year’s performance wasn’t spectacular enough

The real decision the Jazz FO is making is between Continuity, Cap Flexibility, and Cash Considerations.

On a more serious note, it's the second year in a row that this team overachieves. IIRC, Vegas predicted the Jazz would win 27 games this season. He's managed to once again to take a somewhat ill-fitting roster that was constructed as trade assets more than a cohesive team, and made it over-perform to a significant degree. He finds ways to use players and put them in position to be successful, he isn't afraid of trying (many) different things and go to the next thing when something isn't working, but was also smart enough to stick with the zone instead of scrapping it completely, and now the team executes it much better. He's been great, and if this team somehow makes the playoffs he should win COY.

Feels a little like he’s the Eric Spoelstra of the west.

Still gotta prove it long term but that’s really high praise

Yes.

Best coaches based on the Talent they have (i.e. Joe Mazzula has a Ferrari for a Team, while Spoelstra has a Volkswagen and Popovich a Yugo). So, the results factor in the type of vehicle they are driving. I've off the top of my head put the 30 Head Coaches in 7 tiers, based on nothing but opinion. I've got Hardy in Tier 2, and a Top 10 NBA coach.

Erik Spoelstra (Miami)

Mike Malone (Denver)
Gregg Popovich (San Antonio)
Rick Carlisle (Indiana)
Steve Kerr (Golden State)
Chris Finch (Timberwolves)
Mark Daigneault (OKC)
Nick Nurse (Philadelphia)
Will Hardy (Utah)
Mike Brown (Sacramento)

Quinn Snyder (Atlanta)
Jason Kidd (Dallas)
Ime Udoka (Houston)
Tyronn Lue (Clippers)
Frank Vogel (Phoenix)

Jacques Vaughan (Nets)
Joe Mazzula (Boston)

Tom Thibadeau (Knicks)
Billy Donovan (Chicago)
Willie Green (New Orleans)
J.B. Bickerstaff (Cleveland)

Taylor Jenkins (Grizzlies)
Adrian Griffin (Milwaukee)
Darvin Ham (Lakers)
Darko Rajakovic (Toronto)
Jamahl Mosely (Orlando)
Chauncy Billups (Portland)
Steve Clifford (Charlotte)

Wes Unseld Jr. (Washington)
Monty Williams (Detroit)

He resisted my calls to start Dunn and Inigo's calls to start Sexton for way too long, but all's well that ends well.
