So, are we going to get a shooter?

Post#1 » by joeshmoe » Mon Jul 28, 2008 7:30 pm

We were 28th in 3 point shooting last season at 33%. And last year we had 50 games from Wally Szczerbiak who shot 43% from 3 poiint range. Now, w/o Wally, we are easily the worst 3 point shooting team in the league. We desperately need a shooter/shooters to help spread the floor for Durant, Green and our PGs.

There are very few free agency options available. Rumor has it Kareem Rush signed with Philly. James Jones, Jarvis Hayes, Michael Pietrus, Roger Mason, James Posey, Maurice Evans, etc. have already signed with teams. J.R. Smith is probably unattainable because of Denver's likelihood of matching.

As far as I can tell our options are

1) go without a legitimate shooter
2) re-sign Damien Wilkins who shot only 32% from distance and use him to fill the role which he could not fill last season
3) sign one of the few veteran shooters left such as Juan Dixon to help us over the short term. Dixon shot 41% last season in limited action with Detroit. But he is not the perfect solution because he is undersized at only 6 ft.
4) trade for a shooter, i.e trade Ridnour

I like Damien Wilkins, and I think he is brilliant (sometimes)...but I know that he is not the perfect fit....but I still want to see him on our team...

1) The most likely outcome by far
2) Damien is still under contract for 2 more seasons unless he opts out (which I haven't heard)
3) Maybe
4) In terms of value, the most likley piece would be Wilcox

Just because Presti took a chance on signing CJ Miles doesn't mean this team is desperate for a SG. There is no reason to waste time, money or roster space on guys like JR Smith, Kareem Rush, or Juan Dixon. The SG problem can be solved next summer, or the summer after, there's no rush.

Whether the shooter be a sg or not, we do desperately need a shooter to spread the floor this season. We are by far the worst 3 point shooting team in the league, and we do not have one legitimate deep threat on the roster. Jaun Dixon is not a great option, it is just one of the options available this late in the game. I do think having someone to spread the floor, like Wally did for us most of last year, is necessary. Another not very good option is 35 yo Michael Finley a SF that shot around 37% from deep is also available.

Trust me, sucking won't be a problem with or without a shooter.

Aside from a trade...looks like whats left

Casey Jacobsen, Kirk Snyder, Von Wafer, Blake Ahearn, Desmon Farmer

Boston, Atlanta, Phoenix, Denver, Knicks, and Bucks could all use helpful shooters at the 2.

Harrington by himself, no thanks, his contract is horrible and he wouldn't help this team much now or in the future. But you guys are loaded at the 2/3 and could still use an upgrade at PG.

How about this:

Wilcox, Watson, Petro, Griffin, the Spurs 09 1st for Harrington, B Wright, Belinelli, Perovic.

I hear there are talks of a Perovic buyout. Where/when is Marco B going to get minutes? Nelly hates hates hates B Wright with a passion, and Harringtons contract is pretty bad.

I'd say this trade is pretty fair. Wilcox is an upgrade over Harrington, plus he's expiring. Watson gives you a true PG a much better option that Williams. Petro playing behind Beidrins would give you guys one of the best backup Cs in the league. Griffin is expiring. Spurs pick is likely to be late teens early 20s.

Earl Watson/Williams/CJ Watson
Ellis/Azubuike/A Morrow
Maggette/Jackson/Randolph
Wilcox/Turiaf/Hendrix
Biedrins/Sene

Westbrook/Ridnour
Belinelli/D Wilkins
Durant/Harrington/Marshall
Green/B Wright/DJ White
Collison/Perovic/Swift/Sene/Hardin

I just wish that we would've spent our late first rounder on CDR and brought in a guy that could put up some shots from the 2 position. I think if nothing else, it would fill the fans with optimism that there may be some potential at the 2...
