The only problem I see with 'Drifters' is that it could be used to make fun of the team "drifting" from one city to another, unable to find a permanent home even though OKC will be its permanent home.

I like Outlaws as well. I think the O-klahoma O-utlaws sound flows well off the tongue.

Strangely enough, I had exactly the same identical thought that you bring up regarding the Drifters name. And it should probably be left behind, but it does have a good sound to me and seems cool enough if you aren't looking for alot of fire & brimstone in your nickname.

I don't think you should use the Outlaws because of the recent (well not too recent, but still within some of our memories) USFL football team by that name in Tulsa. And someone else mentioned the panty waist league probably wouldn't allow it.

First I will say I personally don't like Outlaws. Not because it may be offensive to some people (well, the hick names offend me, but those who are offended by the word Indian, for example, don't seem to care) but because it denotes the past we need to get away from.

Now. Just because Outlaws was used by another league, although it folded, that does not mean it could not be used. Look at the St. Louis Cardinals. Until the football team moved, there were two Cardinals in St. Louis with THE SAME LOGO, and I think owned by two companies. So, copyright laws not withstanding, two major league teams CAN share a name.

Certainly just because another team playing another sport in another city in the same state used the name Outlaws, that would not stop the OKC nba team from using that name.

But still it would not be new in Oklahoma and unique to the NBA team and they might want to establish something completely new to themselves in this transition.

How about wildcatters? It's got an oil and gas theme and my opinion is much better than Oilers.

BTW, is Thundercats seriously in contention?

I have also heard Thunderhawks. Not TOO bad. Imagine a logo of a Hawk perched on a lightning bolt.

If that happens, does Oklahoma City have a theme going? Instead of the Blazers, Icehawks, and AFL Yardhawks? (seriously about the Blazers. It's the most famous name in minor league hockey... I doubt it would really change)

Slickers? Logo would be some old guy in a cowboy outfit doing a full split as he's dunking the ball (RIP, Jack Palance!)

Seriously, though, I'd guess the owners are pulling for Energy.

I don't think Thunderhawks would fly too well. I think they would avoid it because of the Atlanta Hawks mascot... or maybe we could be the Lightning Celtics...

What is the fascination with nicknames involving the word "Thunder"? Seriously, I dont get it. All these names I've seen involving Thunder suck. Thunderhawks? Thundercats? Thunder? Thunderbirds? Laaaaame.

With a John Candy lookalike as mascot... Dewey Oxberger from "Stripes." He runs around during games screeming "A lean, mean fighting machine."

I don't think so.
