Draft night: How'd we do?

Post#1 » by spearsy23 » Fri Jun 26, 2015 4:10 am

Personally, I think it was a fine draft. It wasn't sexy, and I would have preferred exploring some other options, but At the least I think we got 2 long term NBA players. Payne has me thinking 'bigger DJ with better vision.' That is probably a fringe starter in the league. Johnson is a big body and should be a capable post defender to throw fouls at guys.

Like em both, not thrilled but generally OK. Which is probably good b/c the only time I've ever been thrilled was PJ III (at least the last like 4 or 5 years).

Yeah, that's a good way to put it. It wasn't sexy at all but I think we'll be happy with these guys in the long run.

I think 14 was an awkward draft spot this year. The top tier seemed to be about 12-13 players deep. Hopefully Cam will step in and prove he belonged in that group. I'll be interested to see if OKC will mix it up and have him play a little point with Russ at the 2. Having him run the pick-and-roll with Kanter or McGOATy should be pretty.

I was surprised Dakari was available at 48. He easily could have gone 20 spots higher and nobody would have blinked an eye so I think we managed to get great value with him. I do think he needs to trim down some more to help him become a little quicker and more explosive but he should be a solid role player in the league.

Most likely team to regret tonight?
I think it's probably New York, we've heard this song and dance before and it's never worked out. It could also be Philly, Chad Ford absolutely HATES Okafor's defense, he called him abysmal on Mike and Mike. If he's right Philly just spent the third pick on Enes Kanter when they already had Embiid and Noel, plus passed up a few guys that would have fit better. If Porzingis or Mudiay pan out Philly could be in trouble, unless they're looking at swinging an Embiid or Okafor's trade down the line.

I think Detroit is a big winner, no surprise since I fell in love with Johnson. I'm pretty much certain he pans out now because it fits in line with the rest of the season: anything I want to happen goes the opposite direction.

Oh, and Mil. Who knows what was going on there? Even their front office must be confused.

I like both players we drafted.
Payne will become a sixth man type.
Johnson will give us some solid minutes as a third or fourth string big man bangem up specialist.

That being said, i actually picked "Players are fine but we should have addressed the wing position", because again, i think we could have gotten that 9th or 10th pick. By the time 7th and 8th rolled around, Presti should have been offering the 14th, jones, novak and a blow job if needed to get the 9th or 10th pick and get Winslow.

The thing is, I don't think that package moves you up. Novak is gonna cost an asset to move his contract alone.

I actually didn't like Detroit. But agree on NY, and hated Boston's picks.

Do you not like Detroit because of Johnson or because they passed on Winslow? I think Johnson could be a freak, he's 6'8" 235lbs. If he hits three point shots with any consistency he'll be a stretch 4 under SVG down the road. Him, Reggie, Drummond and KCP is a scary amount of length and athleticism. If Reggie and Drummond put their physical tools to work on defense... How do you score against a switching/trapping defense like that? Especially if they fill in that last spot next offseason with, say, Nic Batum.

Because they passed on Winslow.

Oh, and I like Cam a ton now, apparently he speaks in the third person.

I think it is. PJ3 is still worthy of attempting to develop. This guy was a projected top 10 pick until he got injured in college. He just happened to fall in our laps and since then while he has been inconsistent, we have seen flashes of him being a good player. Its a small window, but before he got injured at the beginning of the season, the dude was regularly putting up 18+, which might have only been for five games, but still. His health seems to be the major issue in his development.

Its not at all. He ultimately was a late first rounder who can't get time, his value is close to Lamb's if not lower. And Novak is definitely negative value.

Johnson is a good fit with Detroit.... er, i should say, with Gundy. He's a stereotypical Gundy SF.

Boston, i thought also did a good job given what they were working with.

Nice interview with Cam, most have probably already read it, but here's a few quotes-

About coming off the bench for his Aau team
It really wasn’t a big deal. You know how when James Harden was with the Thunder? He didn’t start, but when he got in, he played almost the whole game.

Sweet, embrace the role.

About playing in a small community
The biggest adjustment was knowing, you know, there’s not always something to do. I love basketball and it helped me get my focus right, because, uh, there’s not much to do in Kentucky. It’s very small, and that’s really the main thing that helped me. I stayed focused.

Gonna have every opportunity to keep that focus

Who he compares himself to
Mike Conley and Tony Parker. Them two are my main guys. Conley, his floater game is outrageous.

How did he compare to other prospects
Point-guard-wise? If we’re talking point guards, I’m the best point guard in this draft.

I think I’m the next [guard] in this draft beyond D’Angelo Russell. He’s a really good guard, and he can do a lot of things, and he’s 6-5, so that complements a lot. But besides D’Angelo Russell, I’m the next-best guard.

What does he do in his spare time
It’s a while, but I’m waiting so I can play with myself.

CamPayne 2015
“If you're getting stops and you're making threes and the other team's not scoring, that's when you're going to see a huge point difference there,” coach Billy Donovan said.

No. He has not tipped the "Lamb" scale yet. Lamb is on the scale of "If you dont show us consistency and improvement this season, you're out of the NBA".
There are plenty of teams who would love to take a shot at PJ3. He wasn't projected a top 10 pick for no reason, the guy has a serious skill set he is working with. People would be way more flexible with his slow development given he was placed on a team where he would have had to develop behind KD and Ibaka.

And i disagree about Novak. Again, this is a guy that plenty of teams would not mind having on their roster as a 3rd string guard. He's a shooter, the league is full of shooters now, he will have a positive value until that changes.

Return to Oklahoma City Thunder
