I would never let my kids do that. The air time Dara Howell got in the last 2 jumps for the win...you imagine your kid do that and you say "No way."

Where I used to ski outside of Seattle, kids did this stuff all the time. I never wanted to ruin my skis, but it was fun watching them ride rails. I have done my share of those jumps, however. Bad back and knees later, not as much as I used to now...

Our local news keep talking about how hot it is in Sochi, as if this is something strange. Nobody seems to realize that Sochi is located in a subtropical climate zone.

I am honestly trying to enjoy the male figure skating contest, but if the even the best athletes bomb on half of their jumps, it is like watching a really bad Slam Dunk Contest.

Edit: so, the Japanese guy who slipped on 2 jumps beats the Canadian guy who also had 2 miscues...

That Patrick Chan choke hurt, man

The figure skating final overall made me realize having a Russian heel is key to the event's entertainment

Patrick Chan didn't choke. He has simply been overrated these past few years.

I've watched him skate a number of times these past few years in other events and he almost never throws down a perfect skate. He ALWAYS makes mistakes. It's just that in those World Championships, his technical points managed to get him gold during what is actually a bad period for men's figure skating. It was only a matter of time before someone with the same level of technical ability and less mistakes came up to challenge his "throne".

This is not like Sasha Cohen who had all the ability in the world and didn't deliver when it counted, Chan is simply an inherently flawed figure skater.

I just don't care much for figure skating as a sport. I guess I get down to not liking any "sport" that has to involve music choice and sequined make-up.

This is also the first time I loudly hear the Russian crowd. They have been pretty polite all Olympics.

Too much TJ Oshie

Hockey penalties are more amusing than soccer penalties. Imagine e.g. C. Ronaldo shooting six (!!) 11m shots in the same penalty series.

Penalties are the worst way to end a game (in any sport). Not sure if there is anything else that can be done though without exhausting the players to death.

Shani Davis changed back to an older suit.

I guess you can't blame the suits for missing out on the podium now.

Unlucky guy of the day: Koen Verwey, Dutch 1500m speed skater. Loses Gold by 0.003s. :o

Apparently the margin of error on the time measurements in this event is 0.003s...
They should have stuck to measuring to 1/100th of a second, and given 2 gold medals here.
(and I'm not just saying this because "our" guy lost  )

Lindsay Jacobellis crashes out in the semis. Ahead by a gazillion meters, she overlooks a bump. Well, to finish first you first have to finish :X

Q. What is better than a 1-2-3?
A. A 1-2-3-4. The four Dutchies took the #1-#4 in the women's 1500m. That makes our luge team look beatable :D

In related news, it was leaked that the Sochi Olympics will cost $51 billion, which would be more than all previous Olympic Winter Games together. IOC prez Bach said:

Thomas Bach wrote:"Nonsense, it will only cost $40 billion."

Seriously, and then ppl wonder why the Olympics is seen as a real life Hunger Games. :-?

I have never seen a hockey game end 0:0 after 60 minutes plus OT. RUS really struggling vs SVK.
