It messes up people's planning and queues. They see a skipped pick assume they can get a player they wanted then all of a sudden someone jumps the line and grabs them. If they skipped wouldn't they just go to the back of the line then? Forfeiting a pick or skipping whatever you wanna call it should have some sort of penalty.

I hadn't thought of it this way, but valid points.

If this is the case, you should have lost your pick last year when you were late and Alicg picked.

nope in that case what happens is the example you gave in the NFL, he gets skipped but then picks when he returns.

It was skipped. Anyone who was skipped can pick.

Let's assume you had the #14 pick and your 12 hours expires. Then the person with #13 picks, do you not get to pick? Of course you do, but you were skipped. In fact there is precedence for this in the NFL draft. The Minnesota Vikings were jumped twice during the 2003 draft. Minnesota held the No. 7 pick and ran out of time after failing to make a trade with Baltimore. Jacksonville then drafted quarterback Byron Leftwich and Carolina drafted tackle Jordan Gross. The Vikings finally took defensive tackle Kevin Williams at No. 9.

First of all as eyeatoma said this is the NBA not NFL. And on that example they have been skipped due to time. They didn't come out and say "We aren't picking but we'll comeback and pick later when we are ready"

Secondly, on all previous years picks were forfeited (and in reality there's really no difference of skipping and forfeiting unless you are somehow making a late trade with your forfeited pick). When you are skipping/forfeiting your pick, it's because you don't wanna drop a player because there's no worthy player to pickup instead of them.

You can see people are not "skipping" their pick, they are forfeiting their pick. Because they don't wanna pick a bad player and drop a good one.

Or they are skipping their pick because they have not yet found a player worth picking up.

In 2022 Insfo was late and allowed to pick.

In 2021 East was late and was able to pick.

In 2015 kohanz was late, tkunit picked and then kohanz was aloud to pick.

What is the difference?

The difference was that I was a few minutes (?) late, and we were giving everyone leeway at that time. Which is maybe why you have the "Check with commish before skipping anyone" instruction this year?

Maybe next year (or right now) we should implement a 12 hour skip rule. If you don't make your pick within the first 12 hours, you are skipped and the next team can pick. You have another 12 hour window to make the missed pick. If not, then you have to wait till the draft is over and make it (if interested). Just a thought, though not sure how this current situation should be handled.

If people want me to reverse the deal I will do so. But can fathom being bent out of shape over the next to last pick.

I have created a poll. Let the people decide.

It's not the trade per se, but rather the pick being made before the end of the draft. I guess Sab wanted Santi, and the Adams news broke late, so without that I doubt it would have been a big issue. But it will be good to clean up the rules to add the one I suggested for next year, or something similar to deal with situations like this.

In case anyone wants this pick, ping me. Won’t take much to get it!

I know, that's why I was saying I hadn't thought of it like how eyeatoma explained it, which seemed to make a lot of sense. I should say the "later tonight" was the quasi skip-deadline I set for myself, as you can see with the "or forfeit" line. I think that 12+12 rule needs to come into effect.

Can you please check my FA opening time question on the other thread? Is it still 11am EDT on Monday?

Feel like the poll needs to be worded better. It would be more effective if you made it so that the first option is as is. The 2nd, skipped picks go to the back of the line.

No one is saying they can't be used. It's more that you're taking a player someone else wanted whenever you want. You get 12 hours to pick. If you can't decide by then, then you shouldn't get the privilege of being able to cut in line, there needs to be a penalty.

Right now the poll doesn't make that clear.

With that the 2023 draft is over.

I will leave the poll open for a couple more hours.
