Never heard the name tbh. But not surprised. Feels like tennis and swimming is thd sports that girls get into superstars really early , like 13-15, and retire early. And tennis is very hard on the body

3-7 is more accurate for many of the kids competing week in and week out, but there are some outliers. But yeah, it puts a huge toll on the body. Lots of knee soreness for young kids and other injuries due to the repetitive nature of the sport. Plus all of he pressure of living up to their parents’ expectations - lots of angry parents out there which I hated. (this coming from a parent whose son played tennis competitively before switching to basketball)

Her reason was that she lost the passion for travelling the world for tournament and missed her family and home.

That joke is more accurate than you may have thought.

This is her second or third retirement, depending on how one counts her slow return to play after the pandemic shutdown.

In her first retirement, she switched sports to cricket.

She'd have a few options, obviously she could go back to cricket or take up golf (her handicap is in the very low single figures) or even AFLW.

It's happened quite often in women's tennis. Barty and Henin were world number one at the time and Clijsters and Hingis were former world number ones and still highly ranked.

Barty 25
Henin 25
Clijsters 23
Hingis 22

Dude that isn't no green font. You can say that barty is better but don't act like he asked a crazy question. Osaka has also been #1, has more grand slams, and has beaten her h2h multiple times. Osaka is just wayyyyyy too sensitive. She was crying all last week and lost a match just because a fan yelled "you suck"

You literally posted earlier in this thread saying you didn’t even know who Ash Barty was or followed woman’s tennis so why would anyone listen to what you have to say on this topic?

This is the age where 40 year olds Tom Brady, Cristiano ronaldo, rafael nadal and lebron James are all dominating though.

I also said that I followed tennis, especially women's tennis before that. It's not hard at all to research things. Do you disagree or did you just come to cry over a fellow Aussie. What did I say that is disputable

It is true that she has only won 3 slams to 4, but the 2020 US Open is considered an asterisks slam for what it’s worth, as the two top seeds didn’t play (5 of the top 10) because they didn’t want to come during covid. She might have still won it, but who knows.

Osaka
4 slams [2xUS, 2xAus]
7 career titles in total
256-140 (64.4%) win-loss record
25 weeks at number 1

Barty
3 slams [1xAus, 1xFrench, 1x Wimbledon - 3 surfaces)
1 Tours Final
15 career titles
305-102 (74.9%) win-loss record
119 weeks at number 1* (though that earlier article says 121)
* The number of weeks will keep rising as she has a big enough lead to keep the ranking till Wimbledon so maybe 130 weeks in the end)

Both were great young players. Not too much difference between them at grand slam level (3 v 4), but Ash was consistently better on tour.

She was also a great doubles player before focusing on singles, having made the final (or won) for all 4 slams. 200-64 doubles record and 12 titles.

Unless she’s got another gig lined up, retirement can get boring pretty quickly. I think she’ll end up commentating once she makes a decision to return to the spotlight.

Tennis is an insane grind. I'm never surprised when players quit.

She could return in a couple years. Henin retired as the #1 player and eventually returned.

Different sports. Brady is qb, he does what 30 src running or something per game. Lebron is basketball, not much full time running for them either. Nadal is impressive, Ronaldo last 5 years pretty much only walks around unless there is a chance to score, and im not sure any athlete been as well trained as him. Its psychotic level,

She was fantastic to watch. She gave the sport everything she had and she will be missed.

Barty retiring early isn't surprising to me but I definitely did not expect her to retire this young. Barty became a pro when she was very young and she was already burnt out when she was 18 and she took a 18 month break. She said tennis being an individual sport makes it even more harder and she played cricket during that break. After coming back though, she has improved her game consistently with every year. I am just surprised by timing because she was so dominant over the past year and half..she was winning like almost 40% of tournaments where she played which is just incredible. She easily could have won another slam if she played rest of the year.

Anyways, hope she enjoys her retirement. She really is one of the best persons in sports I have seen. Also has the best serve in tennis for someone so short.

If Naomi retires now, then Barty definitely has had a better career than Naomi even though Naomi has won 1 more slam. Naomi has 4 slams but all those were HardCourt slams whereas Barty has won a slam on all 3 surfaces - Hard, Clay, Grass. Barty also spent more than 2 years as No1 whereas Naomi has been No1 only for few weeks. Naomi does have the ability to overtake Barty if she can get her concentration back on tennis...she is still very young tennis wise.
