David Lee on the outs OKC/MEM and MEM/TOR/GSW

Post#1 » by Zordor » Wed Jun 17, 2015 8:05 pm

David Lee and the GSW have come to an agreement that they will trade him this offseason. He is due 15MM 2015-2016 and then expires, GSW need cap to resign Draymond Green and Harrison Barnes long term. Memphis needs a good backup PF option, but 15MM is a bit out of the price range, now why would Memphis even consider this though?

1. Lee has a HUGE cap hold going into 2016 FA which ontop of rising cap, frees an unprecedented amount of cap space for memphis
2. Lee is still fringe All Star Caliber, sure he is aging, but the problem was more with GSW than with Lee's ability to contribute
3. Memphis needs to make a WOW move this offseason if they want to contend for a title and bringing in a past All Star is a WOW move.
4. Since he is so expensive we have to offload expensive pieces ie pieces that did not work out this season, bout to name some names.
5. Moving those particular pieces would be advantageous to get rid of log jams at their positions and allows us to potentially draft who we want and would put the pressure to trade Leur for a second round pick.

Trade proposal:

Trade one MEM/OKC

Memphis out:
CLee
Pick 25

OKC out:
Waiters
Novak
Memphis 2017 Second
14th pick

MEM in:
Waiters
Novak
2017 Memphis Second
14th pick

OKC in:
CLee
Pick 25

Next is 3 team trade MEM/TOR/GSW

MEM out:
Green
Carter
Novak
Waiters
14th pick

GSW out:
DLee
Rush
Pick 30

TOR out:
Vasquez
Ross
Noigera or 1.5M in cash
NYK 2016 Second
2017 and 2018 TOR second
Pick 20

RECAP!

MEM in:
DLee
Ross
Rush (who we cut)
Noigera or 1.5M in cash (if Noigera probably cut)
NYK 2016 Second
2017 and 2018 TOR second
Pick 30
Pick 20
2017 MEM second

TOR in:
Carter
Green
Pick 14

GSW in:
Waiters
Vasquez
Novak

OKC in:
CLee
Pick 25

Thoughts?

Why OKC:
Durant will probably want to leave if they dont win this season, it is go big or go home time and the biggest hole is at SG where they need a versatile guy who can shoot, defend, and pass well and doesnt need the ball a lot, wait CLee fits that description perfectly, they also dump waiters and novak in the trade as novak never became a roational piece after singler came in and waiters and the OKC front office just never saw eye to eye and they want him out.

Why TOR:
Ross is on the trade block this offseason and they bring back Green who they looked to trade for earlier in the season and is more fit to play the 3 man position in their starting lineup and with questions about FA with most their PF coming up for new contracts this offseason it gives them security, also include adding the veteran presence and Toronto Legend Vince Carter back, if anything he sells tickets and fan stuff every time he touches the floor.

Why GSW:
They dump DLee off the roster and bring in rotational pieces in Vasquez and Waiters.

Why Memphis:
Why not? All the above reasons plus we clear out guys who didnt play great for us last year in Carter and Green and bring back a piece that should hopefully put us over the top, sure memphis probably makes one more trade sending Leur out for a Second round pick and get someone like Connaughn, but we also moved up 5 spots where guys like Anderson, RHJ, and other good wing players will still be on the board, add in we cut rush when we get him we clear another roster spot so we can get RHJ, Connaughn, Matt Barnes. So I agree Ross is not better than courtney lee, but we are bringing ross off the bench as a proven solid 3-D player and starting TA at the 2 what it comes down to is Memphis collects the second round picks and the late firsts, why do this? Memphis isnt blowing up the roster as they keep the core 4, but they really need an infusion of youth, this way they get back some second round picks as tag ons for trades down the line, and with the 20th and 30th pick they most likely target RHJ at 20 and Dakari Johnson or another big at 30 as the backup big man behind Gasol OR sign Kyle O'Quinn and use the 30 and the seconds to trade up in the draft and target another young wing like Anderson, add in aiming to sign Matt barnes and potentially one other player to the MLE and Memphis rounds out its roster with a fresh face lift and they can lean heavily as they have in the past to their front court, this particular rotation they will be left with will be closer to their 2013 rotation that took them to the WCF, but it also allows Memphis to bring in a bit of youth and try to build toward the future instead of allowing the playoff window to close suddenly.

Rotation 1: (Traded Luer for a second)
Conley/Smith/Udrih
Allen/Adams/Connaughn
Barnes/ Ross/ RHJ
Z-bo/DLee/Jamychal Green
Gasol/Johnson/Stokes

Rotation 2: (traded Leur pick 30 and a second rounder or two to move up in draft)
Conley/Smith/Udrih
Allen/Ross/Adams
Barnes/Anderson/RHJ
Z-bo/D-Lee/Jamychal Green
Gasol/O'Quinn/Stokes

Just fits a bit too perfect.

Also to be clear, cap wise we can still sign Gasol and Barnes and O'quinn and still should be under the tax line!

Let's imagine the deal did not contain a free agent who can not be traded, if the deal was done before July 1st, the rest of us could help Marc Gasol pack his things and watch him leave town.
