Put Them Over the Top Draft Round 1: Fadeaway_J vs Colbinii

Post#1 » by Snakebites » Tue Mar 19, 2024 1:31 pm

Here is a quick list of what you need in your writeup.

1. Specific years for each player on your team
2. Rotations and minutes for each player
3. Reasoning as to why your team will win and/or why people should vote for you.

Do not vote in this thread until both managers have submitted their writeups.

If writeups aren't posted within 24 hours, we will vote solely based on the players they have drafted (and any rotations they have posted on their roster page).

Player Year FGA
Shaquille O'Neal 1996 19.1
Penny Hardaway 1996 14.8
Horace Grant 1996 10.7
Dennis Scott 1996 13.6
Manu Ginobili 2005 10.5
Shane Battier 2009 5.9
Bruce Bowen 2008 5.3
Kendrick Perkins 2010 6.6

Total FGA 86.5

Penny Hardaway (38) Manu Ginobili (10)
Bruce Bowen (23) Manu Ginobili (25)
Shane Battier (18) Dennis Scott (24) Bruce Bowen (6)
Horace Grant (36) Shane Battier (12)
Shaquille O'Neal (38) Kendrick Perkins (10)

Overall
Incredible size and length in our starting line-up with a huge Point Guard and large 2/3 who are knock-down shooters. Grant provides spacing as a do-it-all front-court mate next to Shaq.

Our bench is compiled with a Finals MVP in Manu Ginobili, in his peak season, along with Bowen off the bench as a defensive piece and knock-down shooter.

Offense
-Shaq is going to have a field day and get the opposition into foul trouble
-Bowen/Battier/Grant/Scott provide key spacing offensively to attack mismatches and Bowen/Battier can knock down the corner 3 when the double teams come on Shaq, who is a willing passer
-Manu and Penny are going to be able to get to the rim as the opposition has no rim protectors outside of Marion, who is going to be spread out 15-18 feet on Grant for most of the game
-Pick and roll attacking Nash with Bowen popping or finding Shaq in a mismatch in the low-post after the action

Defense
-We have rim protection in Perkins/Shaq/Grant, they only have Marion
-Bowen and Manu will chase Nash around while Battier/Bowen will have their hands full with Jones
-Young Shaq is more defensible in P&R Coverage compared to Lakers Shaq
-Grant is an excellent defensive piece as a help-defender and his BBIQ helps defending cuts by Marion

Overall
-Significant size advantage and rebounding advantage
-No Defensive Covers for Shaq while we have adequate defensive coverages for Nash/Jones/Marion/STAT
-Foul trouble is a real thing which forces Kleber into a larger role
-Best bench piece in Manu

Total: 87.6/88.0

Really leaning into the SSOL theme here, adding another athlete and shooter in Jones who can also provide secondary creation to supplement Nash. In the halfcourt we'll spam spread pick-and-roll with Nash and Amar'e. On the break, we have an uber-athletic frontcourt to run with Nash, with Bell and Jones also able to trail for threes. Kukoc runs the second unit Diaw-style with support from Smart. Kleber offers another wrinkle with his ability to pop out beyond the arc. Defensively, we have a range of switchable wings and guards with Kleber also providing some versatility at the big spots. Marion, Jones, Smart, and Kleber are excellent team defenders who can help cover for the weaknesses of Nash and Amar'e.

Matchup
- Initial defensive matchups are Nash-Bowen, Jones-Penny, Bell-Battier, Marion-Grant, Amar'e-Shaq.
- We aren't under any illusions that Amar'e can slow Shaq down, so it comes to getting him back at the other end. Nash and Amar'e will attack him relentlessly in spread pick-and-roll; ask Tim Duncan how tough that action can be to stop, and Shaq is a notoriously poor pick-and-roll defender. Additionally, while Shaq is quicker than probably anyone his size has ever been, keeping up with a greyhound like Amar'e in transition is a tall task even for him.
- While Bowen and Battier are solid percentage shooters, but they're pure spot-up guys who don't offer any threat on the move (and Bowen stays glued to the corners). We're not worried about Bowen forcing Nash into a mismatch by popping off a screen as he isn't a threat above the break. We'll drop on pick-and-rolls involving Penny, aiming to make the pass to Shaq difficult while shrinking the floor against drives.
- Manu is the best reserve, but Kukoc and Smart are solidly second and third. Kukoc can function as a Manu-lite while Smart locks in on Manu defensively.
- Kleber may not be as good a rim protector as Perkins, but he's not too shabby himself, and more importantly his mobility and athleticism mean he has much more of a place to be defensively in this series. Perkins will struggle to handle our spread pick-and-roll, rotate out to Kleber beyond the arc, or keep up with our quicker bigs in transition.

Good luck Colbinii.

While he can get some back on the other side, obviously the nightmare matchup for an Amare C team here, and I think Shaq-Penny-Manu with good defensive role players was going to be pretty hard to beat in this pool anyways. Vote Colbinii.

I really like duo Nash - Amare , but rest of players are better in Colbinii Team. Colbinii has better defenders which can guard each of Fadeaway players. Size is on Colbinii Team side and he has more options in offense

I guess I’ll go against the grain here.

I buy that this better version of the SSOL Suns could cause problems for Shaq. He was never a good P/R defender but became slightly better in the peak Laker years after this version.

The matchups don’t look awful man to man for Colbini but I think the team matchup favors Fade.

Neither team matches up well with the other, but this is about the worst possible landing spot for the SSOL team. Shaq gets more than he gives and that is a really good big three.

Shaq’s really getting a lot of respect lately.
