Four-man core vol. 2: Discussion Thread

Post#1 » by flaco » Sat Mar 23, 2024 12:47 pm

Red parts represent rule changes compared to the ''Put them over the top'' draft.

1. Subject to the rules to be set out below, players from the 1989-90 to 2022-23 seasons will be available. You can use players that came into the league before 1989 but the season you choose can't be before 1989-90. All players must have played at least half of the seasons' games in the season selected for them.

2. You will select a four player core and four wild cards as part of a five round draft. Your core can be selected in any round.

3. Your core of four players must meet the following requirements:

  • You must use the same team/season for all four. For example, four players from the 2002 Sacramento Kings, using their 2002 season.
  • None of the four players ever won more than one title with that franchise
  • Each of the four players played at least half of games for that franchise in his selected season.
  • Your core must only have maximum two players who have ever made an All-NBA First or Second team at any stage in their careers.
  • At least three cour players must play a minimum of 30 minutes each.

4. Your four wild cards can be from any team or season from 1989-90 to 2022-23. However, you may select only one wild card who ever earned all-NBA or all-star awards, and the highest career award must be second team all-NBA or lower. All-defensive / all-rookie selections do not count as All-NBA selections. The other three wild cards must have never earned all-NBA or all-star honors.

5. Overall FGA limit of 88.0

6. Draft order shall be ABBAB

7. Players will get a maximum of a 2-hour window to make their selection when they are on the clock. If you still have not chosen a player by then, or if the player you have chosen is ineligible, you will be skipped. Also, if you know ahead of time that you won't be available to make your pick on the clock then please PM your selection to another participant. NOTE: If you miss one pick and have failed to make it by the time your next pick comes around, you will be skipped.

8. All players will be charged a minimum of 3.0 FGA, even if they had fewer than 3.0 FGA per game.

8. The clock will be turned off between 12 midnight and 9 AM EDT.

10. Draft order will be completely randomized.

11. After you have made your draft selection, please quote and/or PM the person that goes after you so they will know that it is their turn and they are on the clock. You may not change your pick after it has been made, even if the next person in the order has not picked yet. Please note that the clock starts whenever the previous drafter has either made their pick or their two-hour window has expired, even if the next person is not quoted.

12. The winner of the draft will be determined by rankings, playoffs or hybrid (depending on numbers).

Sure.

36 minutes “feels” a bit high given the likely depth of these teams and the fact that not all starters in real life play that much. I’d advocate the minimum be 30 personally.

The idea is at least 3 viable starters, not three stars in the core.

Fair enough, I changed it to 30 minutes.

Appreciate the quote-invite, but I just don’t have the time and would likely miss the pick deadlines.

Can the slow signups be attributed to too high similarities to the previous draft?

I like the conceit, I just don’t have time to play another game right now.

Maybe. Signups on the weekends also tend to be a tad slower too.

As always these games stand and fall based on people's interests. Hopefully this one stands, we've got 8 so far- hopefully we can eek out 2 more.

Appreciate the invite, but I’m about to become a father in the next day or two. Won’t have time for this right now. Best of luck and thanks again.

After taking a closer look at available cores, I removed the ''two consecutive seasons'' stipulation. It was significantly affecting at least 2 different cores while rendering a third one practically unusable. Having more options to choose from should help spice things up, especially since we ran a similar draft a few days ago.

My only question is — who’s gonna give the 04-05 Pistons some offensive firepower? I can’t participate, but I will be “listening”.

Extra props to anyone that dumps Rip instead of Tayshaun. I’m a known Rip hater. :)
