Have people seen 82games.com's "simple rating"? They describe it as thus:

The main components of the 'Simple Ratings' are a production measure (a variant of John Hollinger's PER rating) for a player's own stats versus the counterpart player on the other team while he is on the court, as well as a simple on court/off court plus minus. This rating is actually more of a placeholder until the more sophisticated analysis we produce is made public, but still offers a good fast read on player performance.

As of the last update (Jan. 6), the top six players, in order, for 2012-2013 were Bryant, Durant, James, Paul, Anthony, and Duncan.

So that's the original public formula of the mold to combine +/- and box score stats in some way. In general, I don't like these type of things. 2 main reasons:

1) Fundamentally, I don't believe a perfect metric exists, so I'd rather keep orthogonal metrics separate and weigh them both with my mind.

2) The combination involved tends to be rather ludicrous, and this is especially true here. Roland Beech picked a 2:1 ratio basically out of thin air.

With that said I use the Simple Ratings page because I love being able to see the components all on a page together. The Own, Opp, On, and Off columns are all very useful.
