How are team pace and possessions estimated prior to 1974?

Post#1 » by Moonbeam » Wed Aug 6, 2014 4:02 am

Hi,

I'm interested in team (and league) pace and possession estimates for seasons prior to 1974. Prior to that, key data for estimating pace (such as steals, blocks, turnovers, etc.) are missing. I think basketball-reference used to include estimates for missing stats for some ABA seasons, but also used a simple average PPG of teams and their opponents when more data was missing, but that seems to have changed.

Does anyone have the formulas?

TOV% and OREB% are basically treated as a constant (which increases the error of the pace estimate slightly). Otherwise, the FGA, FTA and opponent FGA/FTA information can be used as a proxy for pace.

Thanks a lot for the link! It wasn't showing up in any Google searches, frustratingly!
