Time Spent Guarding Certain Player

Post#1 » by mvpshaq32 » Thu Oct 1, 2015 5:50 pm

Trying to find defensive stats of Player A guarding Player B.

NBAsavant has something related where it shows FGA, FGM, and FG% of a player's defensive matchup but the numbers seem a bit low and incomplete to me. And I'm not sure if it includes playoffs or not

for example: http://nbasavant.com/player.php?player_id=2733

This isn't exact either, but may give some info. Try NBA.com, go to the player, player tracking, and choose "Shot Logs". Add a custom filter for the player who's defending. I'd add they're not always perfect as it just uses whoever is closest by their tracking which isn't really saying that player was defending the person, but it's the best I know of.

that's excellent, thanks! always forget that individual player profiles have additional stats in it

Just an FYI though, great article came out today on the issues with the data:

no doubt these metrics are subjective as to what is a contested shot or not, but I'm hoping with a large sample size, it is still an appropriate representation of some manner of defense
