Re: Official Thread - Wizards at Pacers (11/8/14)
Otto Porter has already made me forget last season. The way he hit those buckets against Milwaukee and the fire and passion that he plays with lets me think this guy's got it. I am already thinking about 2 or 3 years from now how he will be with Wall and Beal.
In hindsight, perhaps the Wizards might have been better off drafting Kelly Olynyk. They tied up a lot of cap space with Gortat. Had they drafted a big instead of a small forward then I think they would not have tied up as much cap space. Olynyk is pretty good already. But since they decided to draft Otto I root for him to succeed. Things could work out very nicely. Otto is really young, and so is Beal. In three or four years they will be a lot better.

Not tonight he ain't. 3-16fg and 0-6 3pfg. Not a great night for your under paid man.
TA has games like that. He would have them with us every 5-6 games or so. Then he would bounce back.
Had TA never landed on HOU the first time and positioned as something he wasn't, a number one option like a PG, I think he would have had a more productive career as what he is, a spot up 3 point shooter with great man defense. If he stayed in LA, he would have made a smoother career because they already know what he was and how to use him.
TA was remade in DC with Wall and Randy deciding to start him over Webster who played well as a starter the previous year. He was put in the perfect situation to show case his skills with Randy having him spot up for the corner 3 and that set up his last big pay check. When he got here, posters were constantly complaining about how his contract was over paying and EG was a idiot for adding him. Now it looks more then fair even though he is making more then we paid him and that adding him for even 2 years was a good move.
I'm happy for TA. He was a 43rd pick 2nd rounder who has found his way to becoming a valued vet on a good team. It could have gone smoother if he made some different decisions but he got paid and he is a success story. Happy ending for a young man with a dream of playing in the NBA.
TA better not forget Randy and Wall come Christmas time.
Some selective memory going on there, Hands. I don't know whether anyone said this, but I didn't think Ariza was over-paid at the time. I thought the trade was horrible, and it was: we paid Okafor $24m and got 2000 minutes out of him. And when, as could have been expected, he went down w/ another injury we forced into a financially horrible trade that made Gortat's $7m salary cost us $12m.
Still, I do agree w/ your last sentence!

Considering the mileage on his body, it's to be expected. He should somehow be stashed for the postseason only. Shorter amount of games, with rest inbetween.
Hopefully he buys in to that idea or already has and we just aren't there yet in the plan.
Eventually Otto will be the starter if he proves legit which it is doing. Paul is clearly not a long term solution.
I don't think anyone here would have expected Otto to be the starter to start the year because he missed so many games last year. They would clearly like to phase him into getting legit minutes first. He has to earn it on the court and so far, so good. I'm sure he is learning a ton in the time he is getting.
Its been 7 games and Otto is shooting .523 from the field and .500 from 3 on low volume and 0.80 from the FT line.
He is establishing himself and learning the NBA game. I think they are fine with him building up his confidence where he is right now as long as they are still winning while Paul is going against other starters and learning the team.
But at some point, if Otto has proven he is the better more productive player, they will switch to Otto starting. They didn't draft him #3 in the draft to remain a back up. Paul I'm sure knows that. I had to have been talked about because its clear as day. Paul is nearing the end of his career. Otto is just starting his. Paul was brought here to help bridge the gap and teach while filling in as needed, not to take over.
I disagree about the Otto starting eventually concept after he proves it. He needs to start now. He has to learn from his mistakes, and if you're coach doesn't realize that, then he's insane. Ross is our starter, and he's only a 3rd year SF swingman. He is not exactly consistent on a night in and night out basis, but he is learning from it, and came up big throughout the season last year(the playoffs were an exception due to nerves for the 1st time of experiencing it).
We did the same thing with Jonas. He struggled, got his fouls(still does), but figured it out and worked through them.
You hit the nail right on the head with the reference to his drafting order. You spent a 3rd overall pick on him, and don't use him properly. He should have been given consistent burn last season, behind Ariza, to get him used to the grind of the season. He did well early in the Raps/Wiz game.
He has the length, the tools, and cool sports spectacles to make an impact.
But your team needs to toss him into the fire or deep end as they say, to see what he is really capable with a larger body of work to examine his performance from.
Well you can disagree if you want. I was explaining what they are doing and what I see likely to happen.
Otto not starting last year was for a reason. He was hurt to start the year and by the time he returned, they were already fully into Trevor A starting who is proving to be one of the better 3 an D SF in the league. The priority for the team was to win enough to make the playoffs and make some noise which they did. The focus was on getting Wall and Beal that experience because they were the know future core, which they did. And to get more exposure to attract better FAs which they did.
So you can disagree, but what they did worked and Otto got a great year of red shirting on the team that will/is helping him to play more productive at the start of this year. It wasn't a lost year for him at all. He learned a lot being on that playoff team and learned a lot from TA. Then he put in a good summer of getting stronger and working on his game. If Otto had one weakness last year it was his strength. Well he works out with Gortat now.
As for this year, like I said. First step for them was to get him out there and learn the NBA game where he can settle in and build confidence which he is doing well. Then look to find the point at which starting him makes sense. For me, they could have start with last game but any time moving forward would make sense unless Paul is fitting in a lot better then the last 3 games.
As for throwing a player out there. Yeah, we have done that in the past as well. Did it will Wall and later with Beal. But they are a better team then that now and with higher goals and more depth. I am fine with their approach to Otto so far. I wanted to see him more down the stretch last season when he was healthy but I can except what they were doing and why.
Throwing him out there to start the year when you just signed Paul Pierce and Beal is out would be a stretch to imagine any team doing.

The Pierce thing always seemed like such an obvious timeshare to me, though. I figured when you signed him, it was more for his veteran knowledge that he could transpose onto the next suitable SF candidate, Otto. And that he could be brought in when Otto struggled, not starting until further notice.
I know Pierce is a competitor and he has a certain ego, but I also believe he isn't cognizant of his own age and standing in the league. He's got to adapt an Andre Miller-esque mentality.

It also cost the draft pick that ended up being Tyler Ennis IIRC.

Re: Official Thread - Wizards at Pacers (11/8/14)
A lot of complaints given we are 5-2 -- i.e. exactly on track to my predicted 58 win season!
The idea that we didn't re-sign Ariza in order to make room for Porter doesn't make sense to me. It seems kind of obvious that we decided that we would only take on one long term salary -- Gortat, whom it was obvious we had to have. For the rest we are clearing salary cap in order to have room for Durant, and that's especially important given that we'll almost certainly be signing Beal to a max or near max contract in that same time-frame.
Really, nothing is better proof of what a hash was made of the so-called "rebuild" than the "all in for Durant" strategy. If he comes here, those past failures are less important. If he doesn't come here, we'll be rebuilding again.
In the meantime, we've made ourselves into one of the oldest teams in the league in order to maintain some short term success until the Durant dice roll. Ernie has executed that tactic very well -- no one can deny that. It's just not the kind of GM-ing that builds a title contender.
Hands says that having Wall, Beal & Porter means that we're not really an old team. I guess he means we're really not building around Pierce, Humphries, Miller, Gooden, Butler & Blair. That's true of course -- how could you build around guys who are 37 or 38? But, it doesn't change his claim into anything but double-talk. We could have 2 very good young players from our blown 2012 R2, a very promising backup point guard instead of Rice (whom Hands thinks is irrelevant -- he's probably correct), a really good R1 pick from last year's deep draft and a promising R2 rookie from that draft too. Not to mention Khem Birch.
Would all those young guys become good players over the next 3+ years? Nah, of course not. But we sure know what's going to happen to the list of senior citizens we have in their stead over that same time period! Not only won't they be playing, but they also won't be assets to use to acquire other players. In other words, either we sign Durant, or... it's time for the next rebuild!

Earth2Ted wrote:As uninspiring as the overall level of play is, 5-2 is one of the best starts in franchise history. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you have to go back to the 75-76 team for the last time that happened. The 78-79 team that lost in the finals went 7-7, before running off a 14-2 streak, and the 74-75 team started 7-0, on their way to 60 wins, and then getting infamously swept by GS in the finals.
I think the guys are still figuring each other out, and learning how they are going to pace themselves through an 82 game season, they will probably fall back and stay around .500 for a while, but a 5-2 nut harvesting is pretty good, even if we have a couple off a really decimated Pacers team. Lord knows, we've gotten our own nuts harvested by the rest of the league too many years to count.
Actually I had them losing to DET in my before season game guessing, but now seeing Hump as first big off the bench and expecting that moving forward along with a good 3 days rest and returning home after a terrible TOR game and a great start to last game only to make it close down the stretch, I think they should take that DET game getting them to 6-2
Good thing is, we get to gauge DET since they get UTAH and at CHI before playing us. They have 3 games in 4 nights which will be tough on them.
Then 2 more days rest and we get ORL at home.
They could easily end up 7-2 with 3 more days rest before taking on DAL at home which start a tough 6 game stretch. This team is still to spanking new to project out how they will play against better teams early in the year. Hell, last game was Humphries first game as first big off the bench and its still not clear what they will be doing at SF. Will Paul rebound ? Will Otto start. Any one game they play can be a transition point just like last game was with Hump coming off the bench as the first big making a huge impact. I just wish Beal was back already. Things would be a lot more clear.
But the Wizards should be well rested and practiced up before facing DAL at home. Only two games between today 11/9 and 11/19
Nov 19 DAL
Nov 21 CLE ESPN
Nov 22 @ MIL
Nov 25 ATL
Nov 26 @ CLE
Nov 29 NO
Beal is heading to NY at some point this week to have his scheduled followed up.
Hey, who knows. Maybe things are a head of schedule and he is available off the bench for DAL
This upcoming DET game is big. Gotta get a buffer until they can get full strength.

As soon as Glen injured his ankle, I knew Wittman would put him in the dog house.
His shot isn't there right now, he is a streaky shooter but we could use his rebounding and his defensive intensity on the wing. He also forces the issue and gets to the FT line.

Glen Rice is posting a PER of -3.5. We really can't use his anything from him right now. He has been awful. Randy's dog house is where he belongs for a while.

Does he play with defensive intensity? I haven't seen that much of him in person but haven't heard that that's a strength.

The other story is DeJuan Blair. I have been talking about him for 5 years. Never would have expected his Wizards initial games to be like this. Earlier in his career he rebounded better and fouled a lot less. I know the guy is a good basketball player.
Hopefully, before too long both Rice and Blair will get on track. The Wizards can use athleticism and energy.
Glen's been horrible partly due to Randy. He's trying to turn him into an Ariza type player instead of letting him do what he does best, which is driving with the basketball, but that just isn't going to happen with Miller dominating the ball on 90% of the sub units possessions and using Seraphin as the first option. Defensively he's been completely fine. Way better than Butler.

Good point on Glen Rice injuring his ankle - it explains why he's out of the rotations along with the fact that his shot isn't falling.

Does he play with defensive intensity? I haven't seen that much of him in person but haven't heard that that's a strength.
Yeah Rice has shown the lateral quickness to keep up with his opponents. He is also a young so he hasn't been getting the benefit of calls (ie JR Smith hitting him in his special area and they call a foul on Rice). He also showed good lateral quickness in staying in front of Lou Williams- I believe most of Williams points came when Rice was out of the game.

Randy is a conservative guy by nature (from what I've seen) who doesn't really trust young players.
Heck, I believe he's said as much.
Not surprising that Rice is in the doghouse.
Also, Randy doesn't really focus on offense much. He's said that as well.
He's a self-described "Old school coach".
That's basically a cop out way of saying "I'm a stubborn dude who doesn't like change".
President Donald Trump referred to African countries, Haiti and El Salvador as "shithole" nations during a meeting Thursday and asked why the U.S. can't have more immigrants from Norway.

It's a really small sample size. Only 5 games. Only 43 minutes. Only 7 3 point attempts and only 1 for 7. He can't be yelling at Wittman even if he's frustrated though. Not sure what was said but that's probably a bigger reason why he's benched.
Rice isn't the only one who has been struggling at the wing. Garret Temple has struggled over his past 2 games with 60 minutes. 6 points, shooting 10% from the field. Paul Pierce too is shooting less than 20% from the field over his last 3 games. Those guys are going to have to pick it up if the Wizards are going to keep winning- especially since Wall is setting them up for wide open 3s.

It shouldn't come as a big surprise that Rice clashed with a coach. The Wizards traded for him knowing about his past. I did not want him because of him being dismissed from Georgia Tech; Rice being in a car in which allegedly a shot was fired; his own negative opinion he aired publicly about Glen Rice Sr, his dad; and, a very negative comment about Rice Jr made by one of his former coaches. To my way of thinking, his character seemed sketchy.
Rice shut me up with the way he dominated summer league. The Wizards need to see their investment through. If they wanted a solid guy they could have stuck with Wolters.

Tre Johnson is the future of the Wizards.

Yeah, he's very intense. It was evident in summer league, in some of the preseason action I saw, and in the limited spurts he played last year.
He can play defense on ball and we could really use him getting some seasoning because I'm just tired of 35 year olds always supplanting kids who should be getting a fair shake.
Now he shouldn't have gotten into it with Witt, but Wittman himself needs to realize he can't keep relying on all older players. It's very frustrating.

Actually defensively he has been fouling a lot.
But I agree if you putting the ball in his hands would be how you get him play his game. But this isn't the DL. That second unit is going to get better and better. They aren't going to all be standing around to watch Glen chuck it up like Swaggy P. Those days have passed. This team is much better for one and they have much more discipline for two.
That unit is going to have Webster, and one of Otto or Paul and Humphries and one of Kevin S or Gooden. And in the near term, as Beal is working his way back, its going to have Beal.
Glen is the one that has to adapt his offense to fit in. And he has to get back to being the defender he was last year in the little bit he played last year. His window for this years team is very small and it may have already closed if he is mouthing off the Wittman as was reported.
I just see him as a long shot to find a role here that isn't more then just a few minutes here and there. Unless of course there are massive injuries. The healthier they get, they less they need him. At least this year that is the case.

What he did in the SL meant very little to me. I never saw it translating. And yes, he has questions about his character. And he doesn't seem like the sharpest tack in the box.
So yeah, would have been much smarter to have kept Wolters. Or drafted any of..
Jeff Withey
Mike Muscala
Ryan Kelly
Colton Iverson
Honestly, after the push they made to clean house and targeting players like Wall, Beal and Otto as character players, I was shocked they drafted Glen. Didn't match with everything else they were doing. Its was an EG brain fart were he reverted back to his old ways of taking a long shot on a player that looked cheap given their talent but ignored all the reasons they were cheap given their talent.
EG needs to paint inside the dotted lines. Best talent of the high character guys.
So who will be the best player or these 5 in the next 3 years ?
