Arenas for Vince or dump Arenas for cap space?

Post#1 » by mattyBoi » Thu Jun 24, 2010 3:12 am

Anyone hear anything?

Hearing some chatter from a trusted NBA source about a potential Gilbert Arenas for Vince Carter trade in the works. Wonder how real it is.

I was just about to post this very tweet. If this is getting pushed, Leonsis is on board, no question.

Let's do it Grunfeld.

The man can't even secure a 1st round pick but he's all ready to send Arenas right next door in the division.

I know Otis and Gilbert are really close, but that contract is something else. If this happens Magic are going small ball with Arenas at the 2, while the Wizards dump 17 million in salary next summer.

Ewwww. Don't think I can stomach watching Carter for a season...even for a salary dump.

There has to be some sort of buy out they can do with Carter. He might still get a few year full MLE. He's not getting that kind of contract in a year/maybe two under a new CBA.

IF WE do this trade, we will have all this cap room next year and nobody to sign. I cant believe Melo would sign with an aging going nowhere Denver team

I'd be all for this trade. Hopefully we'd find a way to move Vince for value, or buy him out.

It would help our tanking prospects and give us a chance to do more BOYDs next year, even if Melo is unavaiable.

There is such an element of uncertainty with the new CBA that Melo really has no choice but to extend. Who know's how contracts will be structured next go around. He could end up losing 20M, maybe more, if he doesn't sign a deal under the current CBA.

so what? He will still get a ton of money and play for a team who could contend for a title

It's a ridiculously bad trade when you consider who is making the Basketball decisions for this team.

Ernie has shown NO ability at all to improve the team via the DRAFT or FREE AGENCY, and he is being given all the money in the world to spend at a time when nobody wants to play here.

Buckle up, this should be a hell of a ride with this guy running the show.

Stupid question... If we buy him out, would we still have his expiring cap space to trade at the deadline? If so that would be fantastic because there probably won't be the best of BOYD options next offseason with that space.

Sounds good to me, so long as the team views Carter as an expiring contract and not a "piece".

boy that ought to make Vince happy. Regardless hes an upgrade at the 2. dont know why the magic do it though without even knowing if Arenas can play still.

id say make them throw in their pick too and then package the 2 picks to move up

i'd be all over this if we got their pick as well, but with the generally accepted uncertainy around the league regarding Gil, they wouldnt throw it in.

im hoping it doesnt happen, id rather he show he can still ball and we can move him at the deadline for more value.

I think it's going to happen because Wall's been anointed a savior for before he ever suits up. He's not going to have to share the ball or the lockerroom with Gil. When Ted announced EG was being retained, for me that was tantamount to saying Gil's outta here. Arenas will be traded no matter what they're feeding the media.

Aside from jettisoning the prodigal son, Gilbert Arenas, the move also saves the Wizards money. It sends Gil to a good team. It moves a broken down Vince Carter. Orlando knows he can't do it for them in the playoffs. Stan Van Gundy knows that team needs a shot in the arm.

My question is are the Magic also moving Jameer Nelson if this deal goes down?

(For the record, I believe in the long run folks are going to wish the Wizards had gotten the #2 pick. Keep Gil. Draft Turner. Have a very fun, competitive team. Instead, Wall/Carter--if it happens-- is going to be brutal to watch.)

Competitive for what, the 8th seed? Unless we want to sign average players to multiple year contracts, we're going to be filling our roster out with scrubs and we'll have no interior D and bad D at the point. This would be the best path to mediocrity.

IMO, best case scenario is we get carter and buy him out or trade him for an expiring who produces less.
