Official Random Thoughts Thread - Part 3

Postby nate33 on Wed Mar 21, 2012 5:36 pm

I lost my job a few weeks ago. Rather than join a new company (which would involve a move) I decided to launch my own consulting engineering firm. I've spent the last few weeks setting up a home office, getting my LLC designation, creating a website, and putting together my mailing list for clients. I'm making my first marketing calls this week. It's exciting but a little scary.

What's your envisioned primary market/clients?

Good luck. Good to have some gutsy examples around.

I'm a fire protection engineer who specializes in forensics. That is, when something goes wrong with a fire protection system (it fails to put out a fire, a sprinkler system freezes, a smoke alarm fails to sound, resulting in fatalities, etc.) an insurance company or an attorney hires me to figure out what went wrong and to ultimately be an expert witness in civil litigation.

My primary market is therefore insurance adjusters, in-house attorney's for insurance companies, and law firms specializing in subrogation.

Congrats.

One door closes and a better one opens, nate. Might just look like a crack under a window, but it's the path for you to grow into.

nate, congrats. If I could buy stock in you or your company, I would (do you need investors)? Btw, I have a college buddy who just re-lo'd to Dublin from Milwaukee. He had been with Miller. Great guy, family man.

My grandfather was an engineer. Good luck in the new venture.

No. The beauty of my consulting business is that there is extremely low overhead. Basically, it's my computer, camera, printer, office furniture, and marketing budget. I don't need any inventory, or expensive equipment. I'm working out of my house (which offers a lot of tax advantages).

So, I'm listening to a few minutes of Mike & Mike on the morning commute. Tom Izzo is on, and talks about key moments -- two offensive rebounds Michigan State allowed that turned into 3pt FGs by Louisville. The conversation rolls on, Izzo is finished, then Golic and Bilas do some filler chat until the break.

Which Golic starts by saying -- Izzo talked about those two offensive rebounds that led to threes. Fundamentals, attention to detail, stuff that doesn't show up in the box score.

And I'm having a driving face palm. OFFENSIVE REBOUNDS AND THREE POINT SHOTS ARE IN THE F-ING BOX SCORE!
