The gentrification in the last 10 years is incredible. When I returned from college I didn't recognize downtown Bethesda at all.
It was never a haven for rich A-holes when I was growing up.

Yeah, Congressional, Burning Tree, Bethesda CC, Chevy Chase CC and Columbia weren't there when you were growing up. Or were their memberships just composed of OG's like you back then? Maybe you're just paying attention to your surroundings more.

I'm talking about downtown bethesda (also friendship heights which has turned into a Louis Vuitton/Gucci etc shopping center, don't know if you've seen it?)
There was never a Rolls Royce dealership in Bethesda when I was there. That building was a baskin Robbins and an Hour Eyes.

Do you remember the convenience store/
juvenile delinquent loitering spot that used to be on this corner before this building was built?

Downtown Bethesda was a different world back then.

In a way I am glad all of the great DC retail stores & music venues of days gone by are long gone.

No matter how hard gentrifiers try to fit in or how much money they waste paying inflated rents in their quest for urban cred they will never be able to experience any of those places.
They will always be left out of our conversations.
They will always be on the outside looking in.

That dumbf*ck gentrifier Prince of Petworth prick did not even know what an Erol's was.
One of his commenters had to educate him about it.

I started this thread 2-and-a-half years ago with this post.

I lost my job a few weeks ago. Rather than join a new company (which would involve a move) I decided to launch my own consulting engineering firm. I've spent the last few weeks setting up a home office, getting my LLC designation, creating a website, and putting together my mailing list for clients. I'm making my first marketing calls this week. It's exciting but a little scary.

Things are going extremely well. The first two years were a bit rough because I was dealing with a no-compete contract from my former employer, which essentially shut me out of most of my market. I managed to muddle through with only a modest drop in annual salary. But since the no-compete expired, I'm kicking ass. I've already made about 20% more this year than in my best year with my old company, and I've still got 5 months to go in the year. Overall, I'm working a bit less, playing a bit more, spending more time with the kids, and making more money; all with no boss to worry about and no commute to work! And most importantly, I can check in on RealGM anytime I want and nobody is going to be looking over my shoulder.

Nate, good to hear this follow up report.

I like success stories. My wife and my older sister both successfully operate their own businesses. Aside from all the other pluses and minuses of striking out on your own, I think they both greatly value the personal stake in their work and not having to answer to a boss.

I have a friend who operates his own business along the Mexico–United States border. I do not want to get into too much detail but he is immensely successful but also somebody you do not want to ever piss off.
