Wizards = Washington B.C.

Post#1 » by Hitman33 » Sat Jan 26, 2013 1:51 pm

Now that the Pelicans have arrived in New Orleans I think the Wizards should be next up. The "new" red, white and blue uniforms are awesome but the name "Wizards" is just ridiculous.

BUT with the current political climate, a return to the "Bullets" seems out of the question, so my idea is this

Washington Basketball Club

aka Washington B.C.

It's a nod to European soccer (FC Barcelona, Liverpool FC) and obviously a play on "Washington DC." It would work with the current logo/scheme and would be unique and I think pretty cool.

So what does everyone think about Washington B.C.??

I presume GEICO would be the primary sponsor?

Sure. Washington BC. Stock the team with goons and go all Cro-Magnon or Spartan on the opposition. It would work out fine, except for all the fouls and suspensions, and the trained chimps in uniforms playing men in togas during road game halftimes.

Along the same lines, how about the National Maul? Get Laimbeer to coach.

The alternate logo would be "DC BC."

Don't be afraid to love it.

iI do like it actually, pretty clever.

The name I've adopted as my favorite though, if they were to go to anything other than Wizards or Bullets, would be The Washington Capitols.

I like the idea of the two Verizon Center teams to share their name as well as their building. It has precedence with teams like the football and baseball New York Giants, the St. Louis Cardinals, for example. In college all the different sports teams from the same school all share the same team name. The Capitals and The Capitols.

The logo of Capitols could make the "o" a basketball. And I like the team name Washington Capitols because it has a brief but noteworthy history, being DC's 1st NBA team, being coached by Red Aurbach, and being the 1st NBA team with a black player, Earl Lloyd.

By the way... why is this guy being honored at Hawks games and not here at Wizards games?? http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/b ... 53049432/1

Back when the name change was made, at the time I liked The Glory, and had submitted that name in the contest. But after some time and research The Capitols has really grown on me. I just think it is a classic name, kind of like the Nationals baseball team. It would have a newness, and a timelessness.

If we talking about a name change, than how about
Washington Paladins instead of Wizards.

or Washington Generals

or DC Dominators

DC Masons

DC Judges

Didn't it seem sort of likely at one point that Ted was planning to change the name to the 'Monuments' at one point, with some of the new logos? I don't know if renaming WSE to Monumental Sports helps or hurts that chance.

Of all the potential name changes, I like "Washington Monumentals" the best.

I like Wizards fine, but if we had to switch I'd still go with the Washington "Justice" . Headline writers would get silly (court, bench, supreme, etc) but I could get behind it. Pretty easy to cheer for Justice.

As for the DCBC, eh. We already have a DC team that borrows from the Euro tradition with the DC United (see Manchester United, et al). Actually as a labor guy since birth I wouldn't mind something similar here: the Washington Union. The Union makes us strong. But rockin' the red might carry a different connotation then though :clown:

I sort of like the branding that began with the D.C. United, using D.C. rather than Washington as the local identifier. It offers more alliterative options (i.e., destroyers, disembowlers, debt, etc...), and the hard consonant D just generally "sounds" better (tougher? simpler?) than the wussy W.

Richard Justice, one time beat writer for the DC NBA club, suggested
Justice a long time ago, (around the time different names were being contemplated)

I liked it then and I still like it.

The Miami Heat.

I think Tony Kornheiser suggested The Kornheisers around the same time.
