Witt was never the suck. The Wizards are winning now because they have the talent, depth and experience that they didn't have before, not because Witt is doing anything differently.

So how does the "verticality rule" work? If Pierce had jumped straight up, that would be a non-foul, but since he stood his ground, it was a block?

He had lifted up his heels so as not to be on the line. That doesn't count.
It's the same as being on the line.

Right, but I've seen Hibbert challenge shots inside the restricted area and not get charged with a foul because of the verticality rule. It's not like all contact in the restricted area automatically gets held against the defender, right?

For one thing the no charge rule doesn't apply to defenders guarding their own man.
IIRC, it is meant to apply to help defenders.
You can commit an offensive foul running over your defender or by things like using
your off arm and such.
